Basic-30 Press Release

T&R Independent Books Expands Service with Basic-30 Plan

VP Ronald Riddle Announces Basic-30 Plan for Beginning Authors with same great service and personal attention. By: T&R Independent Books PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.July 9, 2021PRLog — Ronald Riddle, Vice President of T&R Independent Books and Editor of TR Writing Services, announced that the company, founded in 2014, is adding a new plan to their offerings. TR Writing Services was launched in 2019 with Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum Plans, but the new plan being launched is called Basic-30. This new plan replaces Custom 120 and Custom 150 which were limited to the author seeking private publishing of their book(s).
According to Mr. Riddle, “This new plan allows the beginner, who may be intimidated by the 50,000 word threshold, to publish books of considerably smaller size. This includes a smaller book size of 5×8 instead of 6×9, although this can be changed at client’s request.”
He added, “Basic-30 provides, at a very low price, the same great quality service of the other plans, thus enabling greater flexibility on the part of the client.”
Plan details are as follows:

* Maximum words: 30,000

Announcing Basic-30 Plan

Within a few days, TR Writing Services will be adding a Basic -30 Plan, a new plan that authors may find very desirable. Not long ago, we identified prospective authors who were not at the level of writing 50,000 words or more.

To reach those authors, we instituted what we called the Custom 120 and Custom 150 Plans. These plans provided our service at a much lower cost, thus enabling them to take advantage of our services. However, those plans did not allow for actual publishing.

This meant that while we helped them get their manuscript Publish Ready, we did not publish the book. Rather, they were responsible for the publishing.

This did create interest and work for us, but progress is always going on. That includes our industry. And now, TR Writing Services is able to upgrade what we offer to people who may only want to write a book of 72 pages.

Considering a published book includes Front Matter (which includes Title Page, Copyright Page, and Contents Page), plus Back Matter (which includes an About the Author Page and, possibly an Index of other books written), the actual length of the story itself can be fewer than 72 pages.

So, in response to this information, we are replacing the Custom Plans with a new Basic-30 Plan.

More about this on the other side of this break.

TR-WritingServices.com brings you this blog post or podcast to keep you informed on the issues of today. Authors need to stay informed so that they can relate to their readers facts as well as entertain them with their imagination.

TR-WritingServices.com is a service dedicated to help authors reach their potential as independent writers. Knowing the world you live and work in is essential to being a good writer, thus the need for the free flow of information.

To discover how we can help you be the writer you want to be, write to us at markting@tr-indbkstore.com. We will respond with a free copy of our Guide to Writing plus a brochure detailing our plans. We won’t ask for your credit card or any money, but we will send you these items for free.

Check us out and get your career moving.

Now back to the article.

The Basic-30 Plan covers books from 72 pages to approximately 190 pages. Our new plan prefers the 5×8 format, although that is optional, Calibri 14 font, single space, and approximately 158 words per page. Obviously, these will vary, but it is what we use for basic design and pricing.

The details are:

  • Format: Paperback
  • Size: 5×8
  • Pages: 72-190

The Basic-30 maximizes out at 30,000 words. However, this is a flexible number. Thus, it is best to talk to us and find out if your book is Basic-30 or Bronze.

This new plan is identical in most areas to our other plans, including the publishing of the book through Kindle Direct Publishing. But because of the smaller size (5×8) we are able to affect cost savings for the user.

Another advantage of Basic-30 is it lends itself to short stories, poems, collections, and other small books.

As mentioned earlier, it enables authors to get published at less than 50,000 words, which might seem large to a new author. It opens them up to the possibility of getting published without costing them an arm and a leg.

The fact is, we can provide them the same quality of service that they expect with the Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans. The only thing we are not including is eBooks, although that could change.

I am excited about this new plan. The reason is that this new ability allows me to get into the smaller book size market for my own books.

Watch for our official announcement or Press Release. This is big news!

FREEDOM TO WRITE

The debate concerning the Freedom to Write is all around us, but rarely do we as authors hear anything about books or magazines, but censorship hurts everyone, including authors!

Throughout history the Far Left and the Far Right have striven to suppress the right to hear or read opposing views. Basically, these two opposing viewpoints agree on one thing: the written and spoken word is powerful, dangerous, and must be controlled.

Furthermore, both sides have attempted to control the printed word. All of us know how the Catholic Church opposed the Bible being printed and put in the hands of common people. They didn’t just oppose it, they used every means possible to stamp it out. This included the hunting down of the printers, destroying the presses, arresting and burning at the stake those brave enough to oppose them. But they are not the only ones. We have seen dictatorships use it and we’ve seen it used right here in the United States.

This opposition to the printing of information contrary to the ruling powers desire, is neither Left nor Right. Both sides use it and when they do, the rest of us are harmed.

Now back to the article.

Today, we have a news media, both print and digital, in the hands of the Left with strong efforts taking place in the Social Media area. Their goal is to squelch the voice of the Right. It doesn’t matter how well written, or how well established their argument is, if they are on the Right, they must be stopped. What government could not do, the high-tech giants seem unstoppable.

Are books next?

I don’t mean just non-fiction. I mean all books. We’ve had book burnings in the past by both sides, but the type of suppression we now have has the courts stymied. Why?

I’ve heard it is because they fear what Congress will do if they act. And that is a strong argument. But it is also possible that judges are simply petrified because high-tech is hiding behind the Constitution, especially the 1st Amendment.

This is a threat to all who value freedom. And it is a real threat to those who write.

We’ve all read or at least heard of books about to be published that were suddenly pulled back. Someone was against the book and used money, prestige, and maybe a little blackmail, thus forcing the publisher to back off publishing the book. When that someone has political power, financial power, or both, we the people suffer.

Why?

Because it keeps us from having the right to hear or read opposing views.

Everybody should be able to read or hear news or opinions that differ from the ones in power. In the current mixture of the Cancel culture and the Left, we are faced with increasing pressure to bar opposing views whether audio, video, or written. And this includes news, opinions, and even tell-all books.

I think there have been attempts to censure novels.

None of this is new. It has been going on for a very long time, but now is getting worse. And we’ve seen it from both the Left and the Right, although it does seem that the Left has it mastered.

The Freedom of the Press is a slogan that the Left uses to protect their drivel, but if a person on the right criticizes them, they do all they can to shut that person up. The Freedom of the Press doesn’t just mean newspapers and TV News. It easily extends to books and blogs.

I might remind you that it was the pamphlets (revolutionary blogs?) that stirred up the people to resist tyranny and rebel against England. These pamphleteers were the bloggers of the day.

And I must add that it was novelists who revealed the exotic world of royal shenanigans. They not only entertained, but they revealed the inner evils of the world. Censorship is never a good thing. Some have tried it with the purpose of protecting us from evil, but it only makes the censored item more desirable.

The latest example of censorship is the coverup concerning the voting rights bill being voted on in congress. There are some serious issues with this bill, but if you listen to the Left, they aren’t worthy of our concern. If the average American wants the truth, they have to plug their collective ears to the drumbeat of the Left and focus on discovering the truth.

Researching Egypt

Researching Egypt may sound odd for a blog title, but it isn’t as odd as you might think. I have often talked about doing your research. Well, I have been writing a book that is nearing completion. It is the World of Joseph, subtitled Mentuhotep Vizier of Egypt. Guess what, it takes place primarily in Egypt!

So, it required research. The subtitle itself is a product of this research. Before I started, I didn’t know Joseph’s Egyptian name other than the one given him by Pharaoh. But research showed that the name Mentuhotep was the name that history identified with him. The many and conflicting names of pharaohs and their viziers was just one of the issues I had to deal with when doing research.

Fortunately, I didn’t have to do the work all by myself. I am not an expert Egyptologist. But through the internet I was able to gather a great deal of information about the Pharaoh, Sesostris I, along with the Vizier Mentuhotep, and the capital of Egypt, which was Itjtawy pronounced Ish ta way. Through research I was able to find the possible location of this mysterious city, design the palace which resembled other Egyptian palaces, and locate the land of Goshen.

Now back to the article.

Tracking down Joseph in Egyptian history was quite a struggle. Not for me, but for Egyptologists. To begin with, Egyptian dynasties had to be discovered. Using ancient records proved daunting and made for a very unreliable Egyptian timeline, which not only didn’t compare with the Bible but didn’t compare with other well-known facts.

Fortunately, Egyptologists were able to make additional discoveries that led to a new Egyptian timeline. Although not intended, this new timeline merged well with the Biblical timeline.

But another aspect in tracking down Joseph was that Egyptians either did not know Joseph as Joseph or they chose not to use that name. It was a Hebrew name and therefore unlikely to be used by them. What the researchers did is research the Biblical facts regarding the feast and famine. Combining this knowledge with the knowledge they now had of where the Hebrews settled, the researchers were able to zoom in on the 12th Dynasty or Middle Kingdom. And when they did, they discovered that Mentuhotep was likely the Vizier we know as Joseph.

This vizier under Sesostris I was the second most powerful person in the government. He is credited with many things, chiefly the survival of Egypt during a seven-year famine! And not just that, he played a significant role in helping to establish the 12th Dynasty.

So, the truth is that others did the research, and I reaped the benefits! Not only did I now have a reliable history from which to work, I was now able to dive into the 12th Dynasty and discover much information, some of which found its way into my novel.

This is an example of what it takes to create a believable story. It is also an example of how you, the author, should handle the need for information. Whenever possible, let others do the heavy lifting of research. Eventually you have to get involved, but it is a major aid if you let others do the work for you.

And there is a big reward for you when the book is finished. First of all, you get a very special feeling of accomplishing something. While the novel is fictional, when the facts are examined, the book not only comes alive, but the reader gains insight. Moreover, the reader comes away with a greater understanding of the times and the people. And you have written something that has value.

Riddle Report Memorial Day 2021

Memorial Day 05 31 2021

ALERT: Memorial Day Sale entire weekend. Use Coupon Code MD10 and get additional 10% off our books.

Memorial Day is a day we set aside on a national scale for honoring and mourning the military personnel who paid the ultimate price for our nation. But we Christians also often use this day to remember those men and women who died for their faith during the past 2000 years, many suffering horrendous deaths.

And finally, it is a time for us to remember Jesus Christ who went to the cross and died so that all men and women could trust in Him and eternally have a home in heaven.

But the official purpose needs to be dealt with here. The United States military is all too often looked upon as a necessary evil. Politicians love cost cutting the military during peacetime and then blame others when our military is caught flatfooted. But the military suddenly becomes very important to our survival until the war ends, then we forget or ignore these men and women. Again!

A case in point was Vietnam. Our troops were sent there with the intent of stopping the communist north from taking over South Vietnam. Liberals attacked our involvement and spread lies and gleefully reported real atrocities that occurred over there. But their concern was not for the men and women in our uniforms. It was a costly war in which we were never defeated militarily but were defeated at home and politically.

When we came home, we weren’t celebrated with parades nor were we praised. Instead, every story of disreputable soldiers the press could find were published. Some veterans suffered from the anti-war militants.

In my case, I came home after serving in the United States Navy off Vietnam. Although I never stepped foot in Vietnam, our ship was within Vietnam waters and participated in providing naval gunfire support for our troops. When I came home, it is true I never saw a parade nor honored by my home community. But, to my knowledge, my family supported my service and honored me.

But it was a war that was fought by men and women who loved their country and who paid the ultimate price. It was a bloody war.

But Memorial Day, started during the Civil War, honors the dead of all our wars from the Revolutionary War to our wars in Iraq, Pakistan, and wherever our men and women have been called to serve. When they died, they didn’t die as Black, Red, or White Americans; they died as Americans. They didn’t die as Republicans or Democrats; they died as Americans. It doesn’t even matter if they were citizens or not, they were Americans. And they were heroes!

These people died serving their country under the flag of the United States of America. And that is all that needs to be said. They were everyday heroes and didn’t even know it!

Here in Port Charlotte, Florida and in Punta Gorda, Florida there will be events to attend. While a majority of Americans only think of Memorial Day as party time, it is the wise person who takes time to remember their sacrifice. So, find one.

I am publishing this blog earlier than normal so that you can be informed about the Military Heritage Museum which will be open from Noon to 4 p.m. All areas of the museum will be open, and veterans get in free (I like free). They will also be allowing adults and youth in at half price which means $6 and $4 respectively. Children ages 4 and under are free.

At 1 p.m. there will be a Commemoration Ceremony in the Gulf Theater which will be free and open to the public. U.S. Representative Greg Steube will give a special tribute, plus there will be recitations, music, and a “moving candle lighting ceremony” with representatives from each American conflict.

If you are interested in attending, the museum it is located at 900 W. Marion Ave., in Punta Gorda. (You can also contact them for reservations at www.militaryheritagemuseum.org or call them at 941-575-9002).

Whether you attend that event or another, pause, and remember the sacrifices made. If you live in America, whether citizen or not, black, red, or white, these people died for you.

Until Jesus returns, we will always need to keep a strong military. Our enemies, both near and far, are always looking to harm us. The recent fighting in Israel illustrates the nature of that enemy. They hate the Jews and anyone who helps them! It is important to remember that our enemy doesn’t care whether you are a man, a woman, a child, or an unborn baby. Their goal, purpose, and cause are to murder and destroy.

Enjoy the day, but also take time to honor them. In the end, whether they fought at home or in some far-off land they did it for you, your children, and your grandchildren.

Don’t forget! Use Code MD10 and get 10% off your purchases in our bookstore.

INDIE PUBLISHING

The Riddle Report 05 17 2021

These days the author has more responsibility than ever before and more opportunities! Indie Publishing plays a big role.

In days gone by the author wrote a novel, submitted it to a publisher, and once accepted, relaxed. But Indie Publishing has changed all of that !

There are all kinds of publishers out there. But here I want to present you with a different perspective. In a previous blog I have mentioned that there is a better way than self-publishing. You are about to see what I was talking about.

First a brief history. I published my first novel in 2003. Since then, I have written a number of books. The first four books were all published by self-publishers. But in 2013, I discovered Smashwords.com and published my first eBook. (My other books are also in the eBook format, but the publisher did this because I paid for it.)

This discovery has changed my life and now I am about to reveal to you what I believe is a better way to publish.

That better way is simply: You are the publisher!

At the time there was almost no information on the subject but today there’s considerable. It is called Indie Publishing which tells you right off the bat that as a publisher you are independent. This is an important distinction.

More about this issue on the other side of this break.

Now back to the article.

Indie Publishing is the author taking ultimate charge. Basically, it means selecting a printer or publisher to print our books. And there are publishers out there willing to be our printer and even our marketer.

The one I am most familiar with is Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). CreateSpace, whom I was with, merged with KDP so now all my print books are with KDP. Plus, I have eBooks with KDP and a few with Smashwords.

I will discuss KDP more in the example. I have also located at least one other printer called Best Value Copy. They are an online printing service that provides quality work at reasonable prices. However, I have not used them or any other publishing platform because KDP has proven to me that they are very capable and affordable.

In looking for a quality printer you can try your own neighborhood. For example, there is a Staples store not far from us that gives business discounts to authors using their printing services. That suggests the possibility that other office supply stores may offer the same services.

But assuming the role of publisher is more than just getting a printer. You literally take on the responsibilities of a publisher. You may have to seek your own ISBN, copyright, and other important items.

In our case, we listed ourselves with the State of Florida with a DBA (Doing Business As) name of T&R Independent Books. Because we use KDP we are able to use their ISBNs which are free, although they also sell other ISBNs for a modest price. Copyrights are free.

It is both exciting and scary. But the rewards can be awesome. For example, a self-publisher may give us anywhere from 8% to 40% royalty depending on volume of books sold. But as our own publisher the percentage jumps up to 60% and more (before costs and taxes).

In addition to that, we have virtual control over every aspect. It is true that with Kindle Direct some control lies with them, but it is also true that such controls are limited.

In establishing our own publishing business, we also took on the marketing of the books, which I may discuss in a future blog.  But in short, we will now be able to use the marketing tools that we used to buy from the publisher. Now we will have the authority to market the books as we see fit without incurring exorbitant costs.

Tip: As a publisher you pay the ISBN, the copyright, and other legal fees.
Tip #2: Indie Publishers can get gross royalties of 60% or more. Even after taxes the profit is excellent.

Example

I promised to discuss Kindle Direct Publishing and here we go.

When my wife first expressed the desire to start writing her own novels it fitted right in with the idea of T&R Independent Books. So, we immediately began researching what the costs would be to publish.

We searched the internet for both local and online printers. Eventually we settled on KDP because of three primary factors:

  1. We would retain ownership of all rights.
  2. Costs were reasonable.
  3. KDP would provide us worldwide marketing.

(At this time, we were dealing with CreateSpace but in 2018 they merged with KDP. KDP is virtually the same as CreateSpace and both are owned by Amazon.)

These are career changing factors. Although we have and will do our own expanded local marketing, being in the KDP loop will expand our marketing a thousand times over!

While the KDP name will be on our books, there will be no question of the identity of the real publisher which is T&R Independent Books.

Application

In establishing T&R Independent Books we also took over what was formerly known as RFrederickRiddle’s Bookstore. Initially, we closed down the store and opted to direct all potential buyers to Amazon and Kindle. However, in 2021 we opened a new store called T&R Independent Bookstore. In both cases, we have control over the marketing, including tracking of sales. Our initial relation with Amazon was the familiarity of Amazon for customers and KDP’s powerful tracking tools.

But our association with WordPress and Woo eCommerce has enabled us to set up our store using WordPress’s Storefront theme. It is another game changer and fits right into our Indie persona.

When using KDP, it enabled us to exercise several marketing options, some being free. Does this guarantee sales? Of course not. But it did give us, a relative newcomer maximum control and flexibility. And we still have them by our side with the primary difference that the controls, tools, and products (books) reside in our store while the eBooks are on Amazon.

When we started out in 2014 Indie Publishing was rather new and unknown, at least to us. But now becoming your own publisher is no longer a new idea. It has the potential to change the publishing landscape in years to come.

Not only the publishing landscape, but our future and yours. You should seriously consider this avenue. I can almost guarantee you that your book will be published sooner than traditionally, and it will cost you dramatically less. Quality is another story as it will be up to you to either do the editing or hire a professional.

Getting published doesn’t guarantee sales. But once again being an Indie Publisher involves great responsibility and great rewards. Being an Indie Publisher has great potential! If you are listening to this podcast, it is being brought to you by T&R Independent Bookstore. We want to be your local bookstore and we are located on the internet at tr-writingservices.com. Statehood for District of Columbia?

The following is a copy of an article by Rob Natelson.

Why the District of Columbia Should Not Be a State?

Commentary

In June 1783, the Confederation Congress was meeting in what is now Independence Hall in Philadelphia. Continental soldiers surrounded the building demanding back pay. They were peaceful, but the intimidation was plain.

Congress asked Pennsylvania authorities to clear away the demonstrators. Pennsylvania authorities refused to do so. Congress accordingly left Philadelphia for Princeton, New Jersey, thereby making that town the national capital for a short time.

This incident confirmed the American Founders in their opinion that the national capital should not be at the mercy of any state. The Founders also knew that in European countries, national office holders could be held hostage by mobs that local authorities were unwilling, or unable, to control.

In July 1783, therefore, Congress began to lay plans for a capital district outside of any state, and under direct federal authority. An independent capital district became a top congressional priority.

When the Constitution’s framers met in convention in 1787, they accomplished this by adding the Enclave Clause to the document. The Enclave Clause reads in part as follows:

“The Congress shall have Power … To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States …”

Securing the national capital from capture was one reason for locating it outside the boundaries of any state. But there were other reasons as well. The founding generation believed that for republican government to survive, decision makers (including voters) should be free from the undue influence of others. They had to be able to make decisions freely, based on full consideration of the evidence. Decisions made by people heavily dependent on others would reflect merely the will of the masters. It was like giving the masters extra votes.

Many participants in the debate over the Constitution expressed concern that residents of the capital district, who would consist largely of government employees and their families, would reflect solely the interests of the government upon which they were dependent. They did not want dependents of the federal government unduly influencing state or national elections.

The Founders also recognized that denying the vote to residents of the capital district would not leave them without influence. On the contrary, prior history showed that those residents would have an outsize influence—partly by reason of their proximity to federal institutions and partly because many would be government officials or employees. Allowing them to participate in national elections would unfairly magnify their power further.

The Constitution reflected all these concerns by making no provision for the capital district having seats in Congress or participating in presidential elections.

In 1788, the Maryland legislature formally offered to cede to the federal government jurisdiction over land for a capital district. Virginia did so the following year. In 1791, Congress accepted Maryland’s and Virginia’s offers. The District of Columbia was established formally 10 years later. The federal government later returned Virginia’s portion to that state, so all of what is now the District of Columbia is former Maryland territory.

In 1960, Congress proposed the 23rd Amendment, which the states ratified the following year. It permitted residents of the District of Columbia to choose three presidential electors. In 1973, Congress passed the Home Rule Act, permitting local self-government for the District.

As currently proposed, the new state would consist of all of D.C. except tiny strips of territory remaining under federal control. It would be called “Washington, Douglas Commonwealth”—presumably meaning the City of Washington in the Commonwealth of Douglas. Many of the arguments over this proposal center on such questions as whether the District is large or self-sustaining enough to be a state.

But those arguments are unnecessary. The history I’ve just recited and the modern implications should be enough to squash the idea.

As demonstrated by the 1783 incident in Philadelphia, D.C. statehood would put the federal government at the mercy of local state officials. “Douglas Commonwealth” officials could refuse to restrain rioters threatening federal institutions. They could threaten or intimidate federal officials to obtain political ends. One obvious tactic might be for Douglas police to harass members of Congress with traffic tickets until Congress passed a particular law or granted the Commonwealth more federal aid.

Now back to the article.

The terms of Maryland’s 1788 offer of cession also present objections to D.C. statehood. The Constitution authorizes Congress to assume jurisdiction over a portion of a state only if the state cedes it. As another part of the Enclave Clause makes clear, cession represents the consent of the state to loss of some of its territory.

But Maryland’s consent to cession, as well as Congress’s acceptance, was clearly based on the land being used as a national capital. The 1788 Maryland law provides that cession is to be of a “district in this State not exceeding ten miles square, which Congress may fix upon and accept for the seat of Government of the United States.” Maryland did not consent to the creation of another state out of its territory. Doing so would have required action under an entirely different part of the Constitution (Article IV, Section 3).

In other words, Maryland’s consent was effective for creating a federal “enclave” to be used as a national capital, but not effective for creating a new state. Turning all or part of D.C. into a state would require either a new agreement with Maryland, or a constitutional amendment.

Another objection arises from the results of the 23rd Amendment. Those results have vindicated fully the Founders’ concerns about allowing District residents to vote in federal elections. As the record shows, in presidential contests D.C. voters do not seriously weigh the merits or demerits of presidential candidates. The District is a dependency of the federal government, and its electorate invariably votes for the party that offers more government—the Democrats. D.C. residents have cast ballots in 15 presidential elections. They have voted the same way each time, and by huge margins: In 2020, Joe Biden took 92 percent of their vote.

These results—disturbing to any but the most rabid Democrat partisan—suggest that rather than admitting the District as a state, we should be discussing repeal of the 23rd Amendment.

Nor has the 1973 D.C. Home Rule Act been a success. In 2012, the Washington Post published a column by a long-time D.C. journalist. Its title tells you all you need to know about government there: “How D.C. became a District of Corruption.” America does not need more corruption in its national councils.

TR Bookstore Now Open!

TR Bookstore now open

The Riddle Report 04 13 2021

I recently blogged about our bookstore opening soon. Well, it is now open. It is more of a Soft Opening with the Grand Opening scheduled for May 3, 2021. We are using the Soft Opening to allow for testing, so if you come to our store now you will be part of the testing. I did some testing already and it appears that everything is working fine.

So, come on in and check us out.

#1 – PayPal

In my blog showing the steps in building a bookstore, I mentioned PayPal. I have tested this from my computer, but not from someone else’s computer yet. It looks good and working, so there should not be any problems. So, if you are curious and want to try out our new system, then go ahead.

#2 – Website

The best way to find us is just typing in tr-writingservices.com. If that doesn’t work try htpps://tr-writingservices.com.

A direct link to our bookstore is: https://rfrederickriddleblog.com/shop/ which will take you to our store’s TR Bookstore page.

#3 – Tour

I have prepared a video that will give you an idea of our store. Scroll down and you will see our products or you can click on a category (genre) and go to those books. We have tried to make your journey as easy as possible, so enjoy and look around.

#4 – Appearance

One of the things I, as the programmer, am interested in is your view of the store. Is it easy to navigate? How do the pictures display on your computer? Are you comfortable and can you find everything easily?

I would appreciate your comments.

#5 –Products

Our products are displayed in a manner that would enable you to see all that we have in an easily discerned format. Again, we are interested in feedback from you, so take a moment and tell us what you think. Don’t worry about my feelings; I will cry and then get over it.

#6 – Product Pictures

I have included pictures of our books plus links to Amazon and to our cart. Any comments are welcome, but I really prefer words like “Wow”, “Great”, and so forth.

#7 – Cart

We have provided a PayPal cart that enables you to buy one or more books at one time. You will notice that tax is charged as that is what the state of Florida wants. The rate is 7% (6% state and 1% county).

#8 – Testing

As mentioned before, we are in a testing mode. If you have any problems whatsoever, we want to hear from you! Hopefully you won’t find anything wrong. But if you do, we’ll be most appreciative.

#9 – Grand Opening

The Grand Opening is scheduled for May 3, 2021. That is not very far away and we are excited. We hope you like it well enough to tell your friends and anyone else who likes to read.

#10 – Directions

I like to say that we are located on Internet Hwy at tr-writingservices.com. When people come there, they will find our bookstore and our writing services where we edit, proof, and publish the book within.

TR Bookstore provides a clean, virus free environment. We don’t require masks or social distancing, but you may practice either or both if you like. But whatever else you do, enjoy yourself while you explore the store.

Videos on a Budget

The Riddle Report 03 25 2021

We’ve all experienced working on a tight budget. It usually isn’t fun. But I’ve come to the conclusion that you can lay a foundation for when the fun begins. And you can achieve goals even though on a budget.

In a sense we are always on a budget. Even when you have a lot of money you are budgeting where that money goes. But our human nature is such that we sometimes get swayed into spending more money than we should on different items.

In today’s blog, I am addressing using videos as a way to augment your business. There are a lot of tempting products out there that are yelling at you and telling you that you MUST have them. They sound attractive and the need seems to be great if you want to compete with the big boys.

Like most authors I have looked at the idea of marketing my books and/or services via videos. I’ve experimented and learned a lot, especially over the last year. I am now investing my time into creating videos that not only market my products but provide information that can help others be better authors and Indie businesspersons.

All in all, the video industry is growing and becoming a needful place to be if you want to see your business grow. What you see on the Internet are very successful people with fancy equipment and studios, but they didn’t start that way. We all, or at least most of us, start small and grow. And that usually means we start with a small or tight budget. Today’s blog is directed at you.

Go High Tech or Basic

One of the most interesting questions is whether to go high tech or Basic. By Basic I mean using the equipment you already own. Let’s take a look.

News Item #1 Overview.

  1. The Budget – For a new or struggling author budgeting is king! And even after you succeed you need to follow a budget. I mentioned that above. The fact is that lack of money is a huge factor controlling what you can and cannot do.
  2. Computer Camera – Not so long-ago computers with built-in cameras were not of very good quality. The picture was not all that sharp, picture stability was not good, and the resulting video was not something you wanted for your business. But times have changed! Nowadays, you can buy a middle of the road computer and it will come with a decent built-in camera. It is certainly not on the level of a camera that costs hundreds of dollars, but it is good enough for advertising clips, instructional videos, and the like.
  3. Cell Phone Cameras – You could almost copy and paste the comments I made above. Cell phone cameras have come a long way. I plan on buying a new phone in the near future and I am already excited about the possibilities I will have with the new camera (or cameras as some phones have multiple camera lenses). When reading someone’s evaluation of a cell phone camera and you see “It’s OK”, don’t let that turn you down. You don’t know the reviewers background or needs. I suspect they often are more demanding than most of us are or need to be.
  4. Award Winning Video – It is important to remember that you are not trying to win an award for your video. You are creating a video for a particular purpose, such as teaching or marketing.
  5. Studio – Many of the videos you watch show the person surrounded by expensive equipment and a large studio. But you don’t need expensive equipment nor a large studio. The studio can be the corner of your living room, a converted bedroom, or some other place in your house.
  6. Presentation – This is what is important and what I address below.

News Item #2 There are 3 basic parts to Presentation.

If budget is the King, then Presentation is the Queen. You can have the best equipment, and the best studio and still stink!

Presentation consists of 3 parts: Visual, You, and Message.

  1. Visual – This includes anything that the eye perceives. However, I am zooming in on office appearance while your appearance will be dealt with separately. As stated earlier, the studio can be anywhere, and it can vary in size. I’ve seen large studios and small studios and they all seem to work. I have found that a small studio can dramatically be changed by simply adding a display of books in the background, a banner on the wall, or anything that adds color and may represent your message.
  2. You – I think this is the second most important part of your video (message being #1).
    1. How does the viewer see you? A long time ago I realized I wasn’t Prince Charming. No matter how I dress I will never be a magnetic person, but I can dress for success and that isn’t as hard as you may imagine. The next time you watch a video that is teaching or selling, note the speaker’s manner of dress. They don’t dress like a slob nor do they dress like they are going to a White House event! Generally, they dress casually. In my case I dress casually, which in my case that means no coat and tie. There was a time I dressed in a tie, but eventually that went. From videos I’ve watched the casual approach is best. I also try to be consistent in style of clothing.
    1. Don’t feel speech must be letter perfect. Your viewer needs to hear and understand your speech, but you are not trying to win a speech award.
    1. Don’t need to be a star. The message is the star!
    1. Be Genuine.
    1. Speak clearly.
    1. Be enthusiastic, but not overbearing.
  3. Message – This is the most important part.
    1. Your message should be short. Usually around 10 minutes or less. Some of my teaching videos have gone over 10 minutes out of necessity, but I recommend you keep it shorter.
    1. Be Direct – Whether selling or teaching you want your message to be clear and less distracting as possible. I have tossed videos simply because of a coughing spasm, a momentary pause in my speech, or other seemingly mild interruptions just because they were distracting.
    1. Be honest – Don’t make claims you can’t back up. I have watched videos where the speaker practically promised the product would do wonders for the viewer. It is better to show or tell them what they need to know and let them connect the dots.
    1. Don’t Brag – This is related to being honest. When you brag about what you have done you can be irritating, but you are suggesting that if the viewer does what you what them to do, they will have the same success. You can’t really prove that. If they think they can do better, that is one thing, but bragging (especially showing bank accounts) could be a can of worms if they buy your product or service and it doesn’t perform as advertised.

News Item #3 Conclusion

I believe I have found the best way: start with what you have and build upon it!

Namely, start with the current equipment you have, yourself, and your message. Yes, you will make mistakes, but you can redo a video. That is one reason for keeping them short. You can also do really short clips and when you have them all done, use an editor to make one complete video.

As you move forward, your message will be refined and stronger, you will be more relaxed and composed, and the equipment will improve.

Announcing New Novel

World War III picture

The Riddle Report 01 11 2021

Today I am announcing the publication of my newest novel, World War III. This novel is the prequel to Christland.

As many of you know I built my career on writing historical fiction, novels that were based on historical events recorded in the Bible. These have been my primary interest and will continue to be so. However, in the last couple of years I have delved into speculative fiction with my first series Christland.

With this publication the series will include World War III, Death Ship to the Stars, Pauline: A New Home, Task Force Hunter, Black Death, Rise of I.S.I.S., and Battle at Proxima Centauri. It is a series that carves out its own niche within the Sci-Fi or Speculative Fiction genre.

It is also a series I am proud of and have been encouraged by. That being said, I felt that the buildup to the Death Ship to the Stars needed greater exploration. Therefore, I set about writing what is called World War III.

World War III introduces many of the characters that are found in Death Ship to the Stars. You get to know them before those tragic events. One particular character you meet is Don Michaels, one of the heroes of Death Ship to the Stars. You get a deeper understanding of him and of the men and women around him.

But the biggest thing is you get to view World War III, which turns out to be one of the shortest world wars in history or is the shortest. In any case, you get to read and experience the war itself, but also the events leading up to it and following it.

Then there is General Abner Smith. This is a man who is both a brilliant general and a monstrous person. His hatred for all things Christian and Jewish comes through loud and clear at the expense of innocent people!

The writing of this novel allowed me the freedom to explore the world of speculative fiction in greater depth while adding to and, hopefully, expanding the experience of the Christland series. As a result of the new novel, I am rewriting portions of Death Ship to the Stars. This revised version should be coming out soon.
