Riddle News: The Problem With Science

Featured

11 12 2020

Welcome to Riddle News.

Joe Biden has said that if he is elected, he will on the first day of his Presidency follow science and shutdown the economy; completely. Dr. Michael Osterholm, an advisor to Biden, says that a total shutdown of four to six weeks would bring the cases down to manageable levels. In the same breath he says that the government could borrow the money to pay for lost wages for individuals, for losses to small companies, to medium-sized companies, or city, state, or county governments.

Let’s forget for the moment that the death rate is still down around 2.30%. Let’s also forget that this is happening although the latest surge has been longer than a couple of weeks. In addition, let’s forget that the economy while still down is recovering and unemployment rate is down. Then there is the fact that a vaccine is already in the approval process and probably will be available for First Responders this year and the general public possibly before Biden takes office (if elected).

Let’s forget all that and focus on the merits or lack thereof of Dr. Osterholm’s theory.

Shutting Down Businesses

Shutting down businesses and paying people for lost wages for four to six weeks could help keep the coronavirus pandemic in check and get the economy on track until a vaccine is approved and distributed.

All of this is based on his understanding of science.

The problem with Science

The problem with elevating science to the dominating position that many people, including Biden/Harris, have done is that science is not absolute. It is constantly changing. Usually that change is for the better and we have a better life than our parents and grandparents because of science. But science is sometimes wrong.

History is covered with scientific wrong thinking:

George Washington, after retiring from the Presidency, got sick. The science of the day preached bloodletting. That is the practice of surgically removing blood from the patient because they thought that would heal him. But instead it weakened him, and he died.

They followed science, but science was wrong.

Abortion. There was a time when science said that life doesn’t begin until after a baby is born. Thus, it was alright to abort. And now we have an abortion industry and politicians who want to expand it. But science was wrong. Today science believes that life begins at fertilization. (There are arguments about when this takes place, but they generally agree that human life begins at or shortly after fertilization.)

Unfortunately, abortionists still operate on the notion that life doesn’t begin until ‘birth’. This old science was wrong.

Covid-19. Dr. Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has been shifting his stance ever since the virus came to America. But we shouldn’t blame him, blame science. In the first quarter of 2020 science pointed to a quick solution and recovery and he followed science and passed his views to President Trump. But the science was wrong.

Now science says that a vaccine is imminent. It is already being tested and distribution is being set up. There are other vaccines also nearing availability. Where once science said vaccines were up to 2 years away, now it is only weeks and months away.

The truth is that science has been changing. As new studies occur, and the results are learned science has had to adjust. What they thought they knew in January and what they think they know now are worlds apart.

But while science has adjusted, the liberal media and liberals in general stuck with the worst-case scenario that they created. Thus, the criticism of the Trump Administration.

Trump Administration. At this time, we don’t know who won the election (all media claims aside), but we do know that the administration followed science, at least at first. Advised by Dr. Fauci and others, the administration banned flights to and from China, then later from Europe and Britain. Here the science appears to have been correct as far as hindering the spread of the virus.

But it soon became apparent that science was having to adjust to the changing profile of the virus. Suddenly science had to develop new tools and strategies. And both were untested. The Trump Administration was faced with fully trusting theories put forth as facts or charting a course that incorporated the theories mixed with commonsense solutions.

I believe the Administration took the correct route and pulled back from full belief in science. Working with governors to shut down the nation saved approximately 2 million lives and reopening the nation saved our economy. The President was constantly juggling decisions based on input from both the changing medical science and from the changing business climate. These were difficult decisions, but the choices worked.

Has Trump’s Handling of Virus Been Good?

Yes, definitely! Although cases are still happening and people are still dying, the death rate has plunged and is still down. Plus, the economy is picking up and promises to be stronger in the fourth quarter and in January (although there are naysayers). Operation Warp Speed has brought hope to millions of people with the announcements regarding potential vaccines.

Assuming President Trump is re-elected (an increasing probability) then we can expect the virus to be brought under control, vaccine distribution to the general public, and a rebounding economy. It is not so rosy if Joe Biden or as I say Biden/Harris is elected. Shutting down the economy a second time would be devastating.

Especially since they are talking total shutdown. Talking about borrowing money to take care of lost wages and revenue ignores the fact that the House of Representatives has an agenda to help out Democratic states that were already in financial trouble prior to Covid-19. Our economy would be crippled trying to take care of them plus take care of Covid-19 issues. Businesses would close, some permanently, and people would go back to unemployment status. And does Dr. Osterholm really believe that the turnaround would only take 4 to 6 weeks?

I think somebody’s science is wrong.

If Trump Wins Then What?

As mentioned earlier there is at least one vaccine on warp speed. Already the National Guards throughout the nation are being prepared to distribute the vaccine first to First Responders and then to the public. By January 20th, the virus may be under control and our economy revving up.

We have had the right man at the helm during this crisis. I am praying that the recounts and court cases will give us 4 more years of Donald Trump.

As for science, it should never be considered the absolute authority. It is an important resource, but we need men and women who can lead even if it means turning aside from science.

Today’s Issue: Epicenter of Covid-19

Welcome to Monday News & Comments.

This morning I read an article that was critical of the way Florida has been handling Covid-19. To read that article you would think that Florida is the Epicenter of Covid-19 in the United States. That is not true!

What is true is that Florida cases peaked higher than New York, but the real story is in the deaths. In New York you saw body bags being stacked and stored, but in Florida there’s been nothing like that.

In SE Florida you have what we call the epicenter for Florida. It includes Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach. That area leads the nation in cases per capita. Another area is the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area. And as mentioned above Florida surpassed New York in cases per capita. This has caused experts to label Florida the new epicenter of Covid-19. But let’s take a deeper look.

Florida has had 600,571 cases and 10,462 deaths for a Death Rate of 1.74%.

New York has had 460,460 cases and 32,967 deaths for a Death Rate of 7.16%.

Again, experts keep warning us that the numbers of deaths lag the case rise. Let’s assume they are correct, after all they are the experts. But New York’s numbers of deaths to cases has been extremely high from the beginning! Remember the body bags? They were hit early and hard.

In Florida’s situation the case load has been high for awhile now. There is no doubt the case load is much higher than New York’s, but it has not been nearly as deadly. When you compare the two states by death count you discover that Florida is less than 1/3 New York’s death count (10,462 / 32,967 = 31.7%) yet Florida’s cases are much higher (600,571-460,460 = 140,111 or 30.4% higher).

I contend that while cases per capita may be helpful to the experts, it is misleading to us average folks. It creates panic. It should raise concern because even 1 death is tragic, but the truth is that Florida is considerably safer than New York. You might get sicker down here, but your chances of survival are higher.

This throwing numbers around belongs in the lab not the newspaper or local news. It creates unnecessary panic. Getting sick (and they say for young adults it’s equivalent to a bad case of flu) is not to be feared. No one wants to get sick which is a good argument for wearing masks and practicing social distancing. But the death rate is encouraging news, especially since the time span now covers almost eight months!

But broadcasting these numbers on national TV is almost criminal. It creates a problem that is bigger than the facts, creates panic, keeps businesses shut down, and makes it hard for people to return to a more normal life.

We need more responsible reporting and less finger pointing.

Ron’s Tip of the Day Covid-19 Death Rate

Welcome to Ron’s Tip of the Day. Throughout the week I will share a tip with you. Today is Friday News Day and I am looking at Covid-19 Death Rate.

Surging numbers, Record high deaths, Alarming rise in deaths

Do these statements sound familiar to you? They should. You read and hear about them daily in your newspapers and television. It is in essence classic misinformation.

Aren’t the Numbers Accurate?

Yes. But when you state the number 140,000 deaths that sounds like an awful lot. It brings pictures of body bags to mind. But is that a fair and accurate presentation?

The Picture Presented does not Agree with the Facts

The truth is that the death of one person for any reason is a tragedy. But we need more truth in reporting.

During the same time period (over 8 weeks) that deaths have been described as surging the death rate has been plunging. That’s right, plunging!

At the end of May the U.S. death rate stood at 5.8%, its highest point for the year. But as of July 31, the death rate had plunged to a low 3.4%.

But the Death Rate lags the Rise in Cases

That is true. But we are talking over 8 weeks! Originally you heard talk about 2 weeks delay, then 4 weeks, and now even higher. Every day we hear about new highs in deaths and yet a lower death rate. So far, the death rate has not leveled off but is still plunging. There is no evidence that it will go up. Yet the media is in panic mode.

What Does That Mean?

It means that the focus on the number of cases and deaths is misleading. When dealing with large numbers you need to keep things in perspective. Thus, the need to take a serious look at the death rate. We need to mourn the loss of life but operate using common sense.

Tip of the Day: It is time for common sense.

Ron’s Tip of the Day Planning Ahead

Welcome to Ron’s Tip of the Day. Throughout the week I will share a tip with you. This is an experiment in microblogging. Let me know how I’m doing. Today I am looking at Planning Ahead.

Are You Planning for When the Country Reopens?

Soon libraries, bookstores, and other outlets for books will start reopening. If we are wise, we are getting ready for that reopening now.

Here is what we are doing:

  • Continuing to write
  • Creating and/or reviewing our media kit
  • Looking for ways to better market our books locally

Continuing to Write

Both Tess and I have used this time to continue working on our books. Unable to do much marketing we’ve focused on what we can do, write. After all writing is our passion, our choice of work. It deserves our attention!

Creating and/or reviewing our media kit

The government is moving toward reopening the country. We can’t do much about that, but we can prepare. One important tool for local marketing is a media kit. Is it up to date? Should I add more information? Is it ready for prime time?

These are questions demanding answers and this is the time to provide them.

Looking for ways to better market locally

Local marketing has many venues to consider. For example, libraries. I am currently reworking some old novels and will need to get them into libraries as soon as possible. But what about the most recent ones? They need to be put in place as well.

Don’t forget bookstores and other book outlets. Plan ahead for these.

Tip of the Day : Plan for the reopening now and be ready to act.

Ron’s Tip of the Day Surviving COVID-19

Welcome to Ron’s Tip of the Day. Throughout the week I will share a tip with you. This is an experiment in microblogging. Let me know how I’m doing. Today I am looking at Surviving COVID-19.

Don’t get caught up in the hype!

Unfortunately the ‘fake news’ or media can’t just report the news, they must also bend it toward their own bias. How often have we heard that Trump said this or Trump said that and ‘offered no proof’? This is a classic attempt to erode support and/or undermine the President.

The truth is that we should pay more attention to what the Federal government says and what your state government says than the television, radio, and printed press say. You will stay saner longer if you do.

An example of this hype is the constant drivel about the ‘cases’. Yes, this is an extremely contagious disease and you should follow commonsense practices as shown at both the national level (.gov) and at your state level. But you need to also remember that the death rate is an extremely low 3.6% of the cases. Compare this to other diseases. Be concerned, but don’t panic.

But what else should we do to survive?

For writers I suggest:

  • Start a new book
  • Focus on research for current/future books
  • Plan ahead
  • Give yourself a treat
  • Relax
  • Get COVID-19 information from the Coronavirus Task Force and your State government.

The virus’ impact changes daily. So trust the government’s wisdom and advice. And pray that it will all end soon.

Tip of the Day : Use this time as an opportunity, be informed, and don’t panic. Most important: pray.

Why Me, Lord?

When you got saved your life changed. You started living different; you committed yourself to God; and you have tried to be faithful in all things. Yet devastating sickness comes or financial reversals occur or you lose a loved one.

And you cry out, “Why me, Lord?”

Over the years I have experienced setbacks such as the loss of both my parents, loss of an aunt and uncle, loss of a grandmother, a heart attack, financial setbacks, and now my wife undergoing cancer treatments. Like you I sometimes wonder why, and the answer can be varied. Sometimes I make mistakes, sometimes I am guilty of sin, and sometimes I simply don’t know the reason.

So what do I or you do?

Well, again the answer to that question depends on the answer to the previous question. If the answer was a simple mistake, then you can go to God and seek His wisdom and guidance. Since He wants you to succeed He will answer you and provide guidance.

If the answer was sin in your life, then you need to go to God as often as you sin and claim 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Confessing sin is much deeper than this blog will address, but basically we acknowledge that what He says about us is true and then seek His forgiveness and cleansing.

Depending on how deep the sin is in your life you may have to do this more often than you like. 1 John 1:9 is not a magic word or phrase. Simply saying it doesn’t automatically right the ship. Sometimes we have to cry out with Paul, “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin” (Ro. 7:24-25).

Then there are times we simply don’t know the cause. In those times, it is always right to go to God in prayer seeking His wisdom. Job suffered greatly at the hands of Satan and didn’t know why until the end of the book. While there are different takes from that book of the Bible one thing cannot be denied, Job came out of it a better, stronger believer than he was at first. God had purged him and then lifted him up.

I think the key in all these scenarios is found in: Have faith.

Trust God. He knows what you’re going through and wants you to overcome whatever it is. He didn’t promise us that living for Him would be easy, but He did promise to always be with us.

Facing Sickness

At some point in time all of us face sickness and even death. How we respond to it often reveals who we are and what kind of Christian we are. Handling such serious events is not easy for anyone, including Christians.

HOW DO WE HANDLE SICKNESS?

Not so long ago (2014) I had a heart attack and my wife had to handle that trauma plus the possibility of losing me. I must say that her faith sustained and carried her forward. But now the shoe is on the other foot. You see, my wife has cancer. That means I need to face the issue and respond.

It would be real easy to blame God. Why did He allow this? But the problem with that is God does not cause sickness. Yes, He knows all about it and allows it in His wisdom, but He is not to blame for it. If I want to blame somebody it would be Adam. He’s the one who knowingly sinned and brought on this corrupt world.

But the blame game is not really a proper response. As a Christian I need to turn to God and make sure my life is where it should be. As for God, He has the ability to heal or not to heal, but whatever happens He will make it work out for good (Romans 8:28).

Over the years I have found God to be trustworthy and longsuffering. He has to be longsuffering because I fail His standards way too much. But trustworthy, faithful, and caring are all words that apply to God. He has a plan for everyone’s life; He has a plan for me. And He is faithful and trustworthy in regards to that plan. So what is expected of me?

He expects and desires that I place my whole trust in Him. In this case it to trust Him to heal my wife, to take away her pain, and enable her to live a normal life. That is the first step: to trust Him.

THEN WHAT?

Pray! That’s right, I’m going to pray. A lot. I’ll pray for her healing, pray that I’ll be the supporting husband I should be, and pray that His will be done.

It’s easy to say you trust God and it’s easy to question Him, but it’s not so easy to actually trust Him. Prayer is based on trust. We are too imperfect for prayer to be based on ourselves. But God is the One we can look to and pray to for our needs. He wants to hear from us, so I am going to pray.

PRAYER WORKS

Prayer moves mountains. I’m thinking of symbolic mountains, but literal mountains can be moved with enough prayer. Unfortunately most of us don’t have strong enough faith for our prayers to move literal mountains. But the heavy loads that we carry day to day He has promised to either help carry or to remove the burden.

WE CAN HINDER OR HELP OUR PRAYERS.

I wish this wasn’t so. We humans are so fickle. We say we love God but then we disobey Him. In Revelation God said the Ephesians had lost their first love. He wants our undivided love. He wants to forgive us our sins and heal our land (2 Chron. 7:14). Or to put it personally He wants to forgive my sins and heal my house.

But if I have unrepented sin in my life He will not hear my prayers. So that requires me to do a little self examination. Have I lost my first love? Do I serve Him because I love Him? Do I obey Him out of a tender, loving heart? I need to answer these questions, then take action before I pray.

In other words I need to love Him in word, in thought, and in practice. Trust, prayer, and love – these three will draw me closer to God!

By the way, if you’d like to pray for my wife her name is Teresa Riddle.
