Welcome to Ron’s Tip of the Day. Throughout the week I will share a tip with you. Today I am looking at eBook vs Print.

Both eBooks and Print books have value. With that in mind I do both. The fact is that eBooks while selling for less have the potential of bringing in top dollar. Print books bring in more per book and still carry a large percentage of books sold. But we live in the digital age now and the future would seem to lie with eBooks.

It is for that reason I do both.

Isn’t that difficult?

Not really. Typically, I write my story as a Print book. This means there will be headings, footers, page numbers, and more. Once I have done all the work on the book and published it as a Print book, I am free to create an eBook.

How do you do that?

The old way I did it was to remove all headers/footers. This also involves doing away with page numbers. With KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) the process is easy. Now I have a program called Kindle Create that does a lot of that work automatically. I can usually create an eBook of my Print book within a day.

How much does Kindle Create cost?

You can get Kindle Create for free. Simply download it and start working.

What does it cost to publish Print or eBooks with KDP?

The short answer is that the cost is free.

However, if you don’t want the free ISBN that is self-generated, you will have to buy it outside KDP and then provide the number to KDP. In the case of book covers, you can get a book cover elsewhere (which presumably will cost something) and use it. It must meet KDP standards.

Tip of the Day: Use Kindle Create to enable publishing both Print and eBooks on KDP.

Ron’s Tip of the Day Being an Indie

Welcome to Ron’s Tip of the Day. Today I am looking at Being an Indie.

I have blogged in the past on being an Indie Author and an Indie Publisher. But I’ve never blogged, to my knowledge, about just being an Indie.

What is an Indie?

For starters Indie is short for Independent. Basically, that is a person who has chosen to write and publish their books apart from traditional or even so-called self-publishing venues. It is a person who is going the DIY (Do It Yourself) route.

What is an Indie Author?

This is a person who takes the responsibility of writing, editing, and proofing. It doesn’t necessarily mean that person does each of these things. They either do them or hire someone to do them, but they are in control of all it.

What is an Indie Publisher?

This is a person who takes personal control of everything required for a professional looking book. He/she controls the printing of the book, the book cover, and all preparation. Again, it does not mean that this person personally does each of these things. They may hire it out, but ultimately, they are in control.

What is an Indie Marketer?

Once again, we have a person taking personal control. In this case, it is taking control of marketing the book. This may involve personal work and/or hired work.

The Press Release is an important item and, fortunately, there is a standard format for these. Before looking at them let me remind you that there are on the internet press release sites. These are structured to allow you to focus on the information rather than the structure itself. And some are free.

HEADER: Contains ‘FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT:’ followed below by Contact Person, Company name (optional), Telephone #, Fax #, Email address, and website (url). [These are all separate lines.]

COVER PHOTO:

A good picture of your book cover goes to top right across from Headline.

HEADLINE:

This should attract the reader’s attention.

SUBTITLE:

The subtitle reinforces the headline but should not repeat the headline.

BODY:

The body begins with the opening paragraph that includes city, state, and date. This paragraph includes the who, what, when, and why of your book. Be brief.

CLOSING PARAGRAPH:

Here are the details for your book [Title, publisher, author, ISBN, Publication date, Pages, Format (Hard cover, Soft Cover, or Ebook)

END:
