A New Series Coming Soon

As the title says there is a new series coming soon! And here I discuss what is happening. My book Word of Joseph has been published and now I am into the marketing phase. But even as I begin that phase of business, my attention has turned to two new projects.

Don’t you ever take a break?

Of course, I do. But I love to write, and I will probably write until the day comes that I have gone to heaven. And maybe God will give me a writing assignment.

So, what are these projects?

Before answering that, let me delve deeper into the first question. I believe that we should take breaks. But that doesn’t mean stop all activity. There is always work to do as an author. I have already mentioned marketing. That requires the investment of time and effort. So, that is high on my to-do list.

Then there are the two projects. The first project is doing research on two new and different books. That involves searching for information on the internet, through other people, and through my own studies. Truthfully, that is a project that never really ends. You go from one subject to another. And, yes, it is necessary to take breaks along the way.

The second project involves two separate books; one is fictional, and one is nonfiction. The novel is the start of a new historical fiction book. Once again I will be taking a person right out of the Bible. This one is Moses.

The series is tentatively called Moses, the Friend of God. His story is told in the Book of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. And it is conveniently divided into three forty-year periods, so I plan on having a three-book series with that same division of years. I might change my mind and expand it, but right now I like the division.

The book will be based on the latest information I have been able to find yet have a fictional story surrounding the events. This is a series I have been looking forward to for a while now. Interestingly, the research I did for World of Joseph provides a backdrop for the first book.

More about this on the other side of this break.

Now back to the article.

As exciting as the series on Moses is, there is something more exciting. While I have written nonfiction before, I have never done anything quite like this.

I will be launching a series called, The Truth About. There is no limit as to how many books will be in this series. I plan on writing on quite a few subjects ranging from spiritual to historic to whatever. Since it is nonfiction, each book will be footnoted, providing the reader information to enable them to go deeper is they so desire.

But this new series is not just a change in content. It will also have a different format. All my novels are now 6×9 and I plan on continuing that format for them. But the nonfiction The Truth About will be 5×8, which is just right for fitting into a lady’s purse. Sorry, guys. I don’t imagine it will fit in your back pocket.

But just because the book is small, that doesn’t mean that the content is lacking. What it means is that I have focused on getting the facts out in a way that is clear, factual, and documented with appropriate footnotes.

So, what is the first book?

The first book of the series will be The Truth About Christmas. Christmas is coming fast and will soon be upon us. Christmas means a lot of things to a lot of people. We have tradition, myths, and good old-fashioned commercialism.

The question is what is the truth about Christmas? Is it Santa Claus or the birth of Jesus? Most people know it is about the birth of Jesus and that Santa Claus is a fictional character. But knowledge about Christmas spirals downhill after that.

We are all familiar with the Nativity Scene which depicts the baby Jesus in a manger, Joseph and Mary, Shepherds, and the Magi. But how much of that is true?

There are other questions, such as when was He born, why was He born in Bethlehem, which Bethlehem, and why did He come?

The book will clarify what is true and what isn’t. Another facet of this series will be the ‘Questions to Ponder’ at the end of each chapter. And at the end of the book there will be ‘Recapping Questions to Ponder’.

It has been an interesting, informative, and exciting time writing on this subject. My plan is to publish an eBook and a Print book early in October. It will be a book that you can read for yourself, or purchase as a Christmas gift for someone you know.

Speaking of reading it for yourselves, why not review one of my books. Next month I plan on submitting more books to be reviewed on Booksprout, but you don’t have to wait. If you buy one of our books from Amazon, you can post a review. Or you can try Goodreads where I am listed as R. Riddle.

World of Joseph

By now anyone who follows me knows I have published a new novel titled World of Joseph. It is subtitled, Mentuhotep Vizier of Egypt.

It has been a busy time since I published it around 5:20 am on Thursday, the 12th. I almost forgot to do this blog. If you see a string of ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ that means I fell asleep. Please don’t disturb me.

Writing the series The World That Was has been an exciting journey. The first book of the journey was Perished: The World That Was. Since then I have written and published World of Noah and the Ark, World of Shem, World of Abraham, World of Jacob, and now World of Joseph.

You may also note that this is the first time I have offered an eBook, Paperback, and hardcover. I hope to do more of the same with future books.

My next series is Moses, Friend of God. This will be divided into four books, Moses Prince of Egypt, Moses Exiled, Moses Deliverer, and Moses Wanderings. Each book will cover 40 years of his life. I am looking forward to it.

I am also planning a new series called The Truth About. This may at times be inspirational as well as informational, but will be nonfiction.

But right after the break I will talk more about the World of Joseph.

More about this on the other side of this break.

Now back to the article.

I have mentioned this previously, but it is proper to mention it again. Until recent decades, Egyptian chronology was a mess. In writing previous books in the series, The World That Was, I had a tremendous amount of difficulty bringing Egyptian history into any semblance of agreement with known history.

Known history means history as reported in the Bible along with any secular history available. I could find reliable history of other nations, but the country of Egypt was an enigma.

Why?

If you know anything about Egypt, you know that the Nile River shaped their story. It is also one of the few rivers in the world that flows from the south to the north, which explains why the Egyptians called southern Egypt Upper and northern Egypt Lower. Southern Egypt would have been higher geographically, and the river flowed downward toward the north and emptied into the Mediterranean Sea.

Beginning with two brothers there were two dynasties established at the same time. One brother ruled Upper Egypt and the other brother ruled Lower Egypt. It wasn’t until the 12th Dynasty that the country was truly united into one Egypt. This union began under Pharaoh Amenemhet I, who founded the 12th Dynasty. Actually, the 11th Dynasty may have begun this, but it was Amenemhet I who accomplished it. His son, Sesostris I, was the Pharaoh under whom Mentuhotep served.

Not critical to the Bible, we don’t really know about this unification, nor about Joseph’s role other than the feeding of the people and centralizing of the government. So, you have a hint there, but it was until the chronology of Egypt was straightened out that such facts began to emerge.

One other interesting fact about Mentuhotep. In ancient Egypt the people worshipped the pharaohs and made statues of them. Part of the confusion in identifying Mentuhotep was the fact statues of him were found. This led researchers to believe he was a Pharaoh. But rather than showing his as a pharaoh, the statues were made because he was highly regarded and almost like a pharaoh to the Egyptian people. It fits right in with the Biblical account.

Egypt and Israel have had an interesting relationship over thousands of years going back to the ancient days when Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph lived. Sometimes the countries have been allies, sometimes enemies, but God has used Egypt and, if I read the Bible right, will use Egypt again. These days, Egypt and Israel while not friends, certainly are on good terms.

And don’t forget, when Jesus was a baby, his father and mother moved to Egypt to be protected from King Herod. A very interesting relationship, and the story of Joseph/Mentuhotep is part of that relationship.

The preorder of the eBook closed August 12th and now all three formats are available at Amazon. But the paperback and hardcover are available at TR Independent Bookstore where all our books are always discounted. The World of Joseph has a special discount of 20% only at our store.

Insights from World of Joseph

World of Joseph:Mentuhotep Vizieer of Egypt

When looking for insights from World of Joseph we find that the life of Joseph is not only interesting, but instructive as well. One of the very first principles we can find in Joseph’s life is not to brag. As a 16- or 17-year-old, he discovered that bragging has its consequences. And the price was very hard.

Because of his bragging about the dreams God gave him, his brothers envied and hated him. That led them to selling him to some Amalekites that were passing by their camp. In turn this led to three years of slavery followed by 10 years of living in a prison cell. That’s a hard lesson and Joseph learned it!

Another lesson he learned, and it is the primary lesson, is that evil often overcomes a man, but God means it for good. This is a well-known lesson from Joseph’s life, so I won’t cover that. In Romans 8:28 we read that “all things work together for good to them that love God.” It took 13 years, but Joseph learned this lesson well.

More about this on the other side of this break.

A third lesson is putting God first and leaving the consequences in His hands. This was a hard lesson for Joseph to learn but he at least began to understand it soon after he became a slave.

Throughout the three years he served Potiphar he put God first and God blessed him and Potiphar. His intelligence and work ethic was such that he quickly became responsible for all of Potiphar’s business.

After being framed by Potiphar’s wife, he was arrested and placed in prison though Potiphar had the right to execute him. (Obviously, he didn’t believe his wife about being raped.) But once again, Joseph trusted God and the warden soon was entrusting to him the running of the prison.

A quick note here. Joseph’s work for both Potiphar and the warden was that of a scribe. This meant he kept track of things. For Potiphar, he kept track of his holdings, the slaves, hired servants, and all business dealings. For the warden he undoubtedly kept track of prisoners coming and going, what cells they were, the crimes they were accused of, whether they were guilty or waiting for trial, and anything else relating to them.

Joseph was now in prison having first been sold into slavery by his brothers and then framed by Potiphar’s wife. Though he had difficulty understanding why, he continued to trust God. Even after helping to save the butler’s life, he still trusted God though the butler forgot him.

This faithfulness on his part led to God continuing to not only use him, but to prepare him for the day he would be Vizier of Egypt. That is a position equivalent to Prime Minister. Now as Mentuhotep, he was entrusted with the welfare of a nation. Pharaoh recognized that the Spirit of God was in Joseph. That doesn’t mean that Pharaoh was a believer or ever became a believer; it means he was deeply impressed and realized that Joseph’s God spoke through Joseph.

It was at this time that Mentuhotep entered Egyptian history. In the past decade much has been discovered about this great man. Normally, statues were only made of Pharaohs, but the Egyptians were so impressed with Mentuhotep that they made statues of him. The cover of my book is a picture of one such statue.

An interesting fact about Joseph is that nothing is said bad about him from the moment his brothers sold him to the day of his death. He, like Daniel, is never criticized by God or is anything amiss said about him. What a legacy!

Part of Joseph’s training had been to look at people through the eyes of a scribe rather than the politics of the time. So, when he stood before Pharaoh to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams he was prepared intellectually as a scribe and spiritually as a servant of God.

God had taken him through the school of hard knocks. His faith had grown, and his experience had broadened his understanding. And he was humble! He had matured and was ready to serve God though he didn’t realize it. And God took him to save Egypt and to save the Hebrews, God’s own people.

We Christians live in a world that is increasingly antichristian, but we should be comforted and encouraged with the knowledge that God is still in control. It is too easy to get engrossed with the evil things happening around us and forget that nothing surprises God. He knows and has already prepared for any difficulties we may find ourselves experiencing.

Like the song says, “trust and obey, for there’s no other way.”

It is not easy, but we can follow Joseph’s example and continue trusting God.

My newest book, The World of Joseph, comes in three formats: paperback, hard cover, and eBook. All will be published at the same time to give customers a good choice from the beginning.

On August 8, 2021, the eBook version will go on Pre-Order and the actual launch will be August 12, 2021. As noted above, the paperback and hard cover versions will also be published on August 12, 2021. Preparing to be Published

I am preparing to be published again. It is always the same feeling of excitement mixed with anticipation.

The manuscript has been proofed, the cover is ready, and I am nearing the time when the eBook will go on PreOrder status. But that is not all.

I have been busy upgrading my website. Why?

It is always a good practice to frequently update your website. It presents fresh material for the bots to explore and report back to their masters whether it be Google, Yahoo, or a host of others.

But in this case, I was updating to make the products I sell easier. Easier for you to buy and easier for me to manage. Earlier this year, I upgraded to WooCommerce on my website. Today, I added the PayPal extension that will allow my customers the safest, most reliable experience as they shop.

There are many trusted venues or gateways that businesses can use for their customers benefit. And I am sure that they do everything possible to ensure a safe environment and a smooth, reliable transaction experience. But, in my opinion, PayPal is the best.

You may prefer other methods for customers to use. And that is fine.

I am writing this blog not to promote PayPal, but to emphasize that when you are done writing, you still have things you should do. One is to take steps to improve customer experience.

Sitting back and just waiting for the publication date is not being proactive. There are things you can do like developing ads, updating your website, and using Social Media to promote some buzz. In this way, you can help your own cause.

One of the actions I am currently taking is working on a video that I can email to people I know, insert in a blog like this, and upload to Amazon Central. All of these are actions that have the potential to help generate sales.

Whether I use this video or another remains to be seen. There are plans for a professional video shoot, but I want a good backup just in case. What’s the difference?

Well, I use my computer camera and mike, while a professional will use a more sophisticate camera. Also, a professional does it for a living either as photographer or as part of his overall business.

I have been doing all my videos which are admittedly amateur. They could be improved upon, and it would relieve me of the time of doing them myself. A new company, Pure Video, will be working with me in the near future. Right now it is a matter of getting all our ducks in a row.

Most advice you get will tell you to get professional help for editing, proofing, and marketing. But not everybody has the time or money to find the right professional for their project. It just so happens that I only learned about Pure Video recently from a friend who was starting it. I know him and already have confidence in him, so that simplifies the matter of research. I will probably do a blog about him in the near future.

The point I am making right now, however, is that don’t waste time between the end of writing and the launch of your new book! It is tempting to rest because you have been pouring your heart out in writing and it just might have tired you out. Also, it is easy to think that publishing is just flipping the switch.

The truth is that if you are an Indie Publisher, you still have work to do. In my case, I still had to access my KDP account and make sure everything is ready to go, including pricing. I also need to create the book upon my website, which I will be doing this week. Since I have a bookstore, I will need to determine the discounted price (all our books are discounted). This will be a special discount reflecting the fact this is a new book.

My newest book, The World of Joseph, will come in three formats: paperback, hard cover, and eBook. All will be published at the same time to give customers a good choice from the beginning.

On August 8, 2021, the eBook version will go on PreOrder and the actual launch will be August 12, 2021. Potiphar in The World of Joseph

World of Joseph:Mentuhotep Vizieer of Egypt

The title of this blog is Potiphar in the World of Joseph. And it is part of my ongoing blogging about my upcoming book The World of Joseph: Mentuhotep Vizier of Egypt. So, today I will highlight Potiphar and wife, whom I call Zulekha.

According to the Bible in Genesis 39: 1, Potiphar was the Captain of the guard. In my book I used the term Royal Guard as Pharaoh was the king. But it doesn’t take much imagination to figure out that this guard was not a dozen men guarding the king, but rather Pharaoh’s army.

In those days Egypt was under one ruler, Pharaoh Sesostris I. His father had taken the throne from another and united the north and south under one rule. But it wasn’t done with just his army. Although he was looked upon as the ruler, Pharaoh did not have absolute rule at that time.

His support was dependent upon the governors of the various regions. These governors had their own armies, and some were strong enough to resist Pharaoh if they had a mind to do so. As long as they were kept busy fighting the Nubians in the south and the Hyksos in the north, they were controllable.

But they represented a problem. As Captain of the Guard, a position probably equivalent to General of the Army, Potiphar would have had responsibility not only for Pharaoh’s life but for the kingdom itself.

More about this on the other side of this break.

In the Bible, Potiphar disappears from the account of Joseph’s life in Egypt when Joseph is cast into prison. But most likely Potiphar was still around as the commanding general and perhaps over the royal prison. If so, he would have had numerous opportunities to run into the young man.

When writing I like to ask questions and my first question was, What happened when Joseph became Mentuhotep the Vizier, and he came into contact with Potiphar? It was an intriguing question that led to the development of Potiphar’s position and interaction with the vizier.

A follow-up question was, Did Potiphar keep track of Joseph while the lad was in prison? After all, it appears in the Bible that Potiphar did not believe his wife’s charge of attempted rape by Joseph. Another question would be, As the second most powerful man in the kingdom what, if any, relationship would Mentuhotep have with Potiphar?

In other words, there is a lot of room for speculation about their relationship. And for that matter, Joseph’s relationship with Potiphar’s wife!

Research didn’t answer those questions, but it did provide the backdrop that I could use to develop the story. And if you are a writer reading this then I want you to see that no matter how hard or uncomfortable research maybe it has the benefit of adding to your story. Not only as historical backup, but it can lead to subplots that bring your story alive!

I have mentioned in previous blogs about recent developments in Egyptology. When I began writing, Egyptology was based on Traditional chronologies. These chronologies were totally unreliable. So, I was very pleased when modern archaeological research resulted in a far more reliable chronology.

In the past I had to try to make the Egyptian timelines match with the Biblical. And that was horrendous! So, you can imagine my relief when I discovered that there was now a newer, clearer, and far more accurate Egyptian chronology.  I was even more excited when I compared that chronology to the Biblical and found virtual agreement!

If you are an author and you are leery of doing research or you regard it as too much grunt work, I recommend you purpose to do it anyway. And remember, when using secular sources, they tend to radically change. If your book is related to the Bible, then consider the Bible as your ultimate source. The King James Bible is an excellent resource and doesn’t change unlike some of the newer translations.

When you pick up my book to read take the time to see how much of a role Potiphar had in Joseph’s life. And take a look at his wife, Zulekha.

On August 8, 2021, the eBook version will go on Pre-Order and the actual launch will be August 12, 2021. The paperback and hard cover versions will also be published on August 12, 2021. A NOVEL ABOUT JOSEPH

World of Joseph:Mentuhotep Vizieer of Egypt

On August 12th my new novel The World of Joseph, which is a novel about Joseph, will be published. And around August 8th you can preorder your eBook.

This is the last book of the series The World That Was. It started with Perished: The World That Was which covered Creation to the Flood. This first and foundational book of the series introduced the readers to Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Seth, Enos, Enoch, Methuselah, and Noah. It provided a peak into the civilized world that existed prior to the Flood.

Then came the book The World of Noah and The Ark which covered the construction of the Ark, the gathering of the animals, the wickedness of the world, the coming of the Flood, and the Flood itself. It also included the landing on Mount Ararat, the descent, the establishment of a new life, and the first snowball fight.

This was followed by The World of Shem in which Shem was called by God to observe and report on Noah’s descendants. It included the Tower of Babel, the founding of Elam, Egypt, and Libya. Then came The World of Abraham and the reader experienced his adventurous life. After that came The World of Jacob which detailed his adventures and his relationship with his brother Esau.

Now comes the latest novel, The World of Joseph.

More about this on the other side of this break.

Now back to the article.

The World of Joseph tells the story of a 17-year-old boy sold into slavery, later imprisoned, and then rising to the position of Vizier of Egypt. This latter title could best be understood as the Prime Minister of Egypt.

We know who Joseph was and what he accomplished by reading the Bible. But a man of his stature surely would have been written about in Egyptian history. Alas, for centuries the history of Egypt has been mysterious and confusing. The problem was that the original government of Egypt was actually two governments and two royal families.

In the beginning, there was an Upper Egypt, which was located in the southern end of Egypt, and an Lower Egypt located in the north. Upper and Lower were related to the Nile which flowed from the south down to the north. The Nile is one of only a few rivers that flow from the south to the north.

The earliest histories of Egypt dealt with two Egyptian thrones. This started with two brothers shortly after the Confusion of Tongues in Babel. Although brothers they were both aspiring to rule both kingdoms and that created strife. Especially if they talked like they ruled both areas. So, confusion began at the very start and for centuries the history of Egypt treated these kingdoms as one following the other instead of existing side by side.

But in recent decades the confusion has been penetrated and a better understanding has emerged. Whereas the Traditional Egyptian history could not mesh with known history elsewhere, new understandings have emerged that have made Egyptian history more amenable to that of other countries and histories, including the Bible.

Which brings us to the 12th Dynasty. New revelations have shown that the second Pharaoh of the 12th Dynasty was Sesostris I. It was during his rule that a young teenage boy entered Egypt as a slave. His name was Joseph, and he was sold to the Captain of the King’s Guard. This title can be freely translated as General of the Egyptian army.

Amenemhet I was the first Pharaoh of the 12th Dynasty having removed Pharaoh Nebtawyre of the 11th Dynasty. His son was Sesostris I and they co-reigned for a while. Joseph served in Potiphar’s house for 3 years and then spent the next 10 years in prison.

At the age of 30, Joseph became Vizier of Egypt. While the Pharaoh gave him another name, the name that stuck was Mentuhotep! And this is where we discover the Egyptian record of Joseph as Mentuhotep. The cover of my book is a picture of Mentuhotep as a scribe, which fits completely with Joseph as a slave running affairs for Potiphar and later the prison, and finally as Vizier of all of Egypt.

Discovering all this history has not been easy. There are still web pages out there on the internet that use Traditional Egyptian history. But more and more the newer, better organized, history has been emerging. As an author doing research, I had to discover new sources that were reliable. As always, I used the Bible as the filter determining what could be believed and what couldn’t. Fortunately, the new updated Egyptian history meshes well with Biblical and other secular histories, all of which made my job easier.

As mentioned at the beginning of this blog, the new book will be available in all formats, such as paperback, hardcover, and eBook on August 12th . And the eBook can be preordered around August 8th.

Researching Egypt

Researching Egypt may sound odd for a blog title, but it isn’t as odd as you might think. I have often talked about doing your research. Well, I have been writing a book that is nearing completion. It is the World of Joseph, subtitled Mentuhotep Vizier of Egypt. Guess what, it takes place primarily in Egypt!

So, it required research. The subtitle itself is a product of this research. Before I started, I didn’t know Joseph’s Egyptian name other than the one given him by Pharaoh. But research showed that the name Mentuhotep was the name that history identified with him. The many and conflicting names of pharaohs and their viziers was just one of the issues I had to deal with when doing research.

Fortunately, I didn’t have to do the work all by myself. I am not an expert Egyptologist. But through the internet I was able to gather a great deal of information about the Pharaoh, Sesostris I, along with the Vizier Mentuhotep, and the capital of Egypt, which was Itjtawy pronounced Ish ta way. Through research I was able to find the possible location of this mysterious city, design the palace which resembled other Egyptian palaces, and locate the land of Goshen.

Now back to the article.

Tracking down Joseph in Egyptian history was quite a struggle. Not for me, but for Egyptologists. To begin with, Egyptian dynasties had to be discovered. Using ancient records proved daunting and made for a very unreliable Egyptian timeline, which not only didn’t compare with the Bible but didn’t compare with other well-known facts.

Fortunately, Egyptologists were able to make additional discoveries that led to a new Egyptian timeline. Although not intended, this new timeline merged well with the Biblical timeline.

But another aspect in tracking down Joseph was that Egyptians either did not know Joseph as Joseph or they chose not to use that name. It was a Hebrew name and therefore unlikely to be used by them. What the researchers did is research the Biblical facts regarding the feast and famine. Combining this knowledge with the knowledge they now had of where the Hebrews settled, the researchers were able to zoom in on the 12th Dynasty or Middle Kingdom. And when they did, they discovered that Mentuhotep was likely the Vizier we know as Joseph.

This vizier under Sesostris I was the second most powerful person in the government. He is credited with many things, chiefly the survival of Egypt during a seven-year famine! And not just that, he played a significant role in helping to establish the 12th Dynasty.

So, the truth is that others did the research, and I reaped the benefits! Not only did I now have a reliable history from which to work, I was now able to dive into the 12th Dynasty and discover much information, some of which found its way into my novel.

This is an example of what it takes to create a believable story. It is also an example of how you, the author, should handle the need for information. Whenever possible, let others do the heavy lifting of research. Eventually you have to get involved, but it is a major aid if you let others do the work for you.

And there is a big reward for you when the book is finished. First of all, you get a very special feeling of accomplishing something. While the novel is fictional, when the facts are examined, the book not only comes alive, but the reader gains insight. Moreover, the reader comes away with a greater understanding of the times and the people. And you have written something that has value.
