Christian Service in the Church

“Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:” Eph. 6:5-7
“And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.” Eph. 6:9
Last week I wrote about the Christian in the Workplace and used the Scriptures above. They are just as applicable in the local church as in the workplace.
Let’s take a look at the first passage, Ephesians 6:5-7.
Work as Unto The Lord.
If you are working in the local church can you image doing your work any other way? You are literally working for the Lord for it is His church! With that in mind it is the same as last week, everything follows from working unto the Lord.
When working in the local church your pastor is your boss. You are commanded to love him both as a fellow Christian and as the Under Shepherd. If you can’t love him then you can’t really serve him. And there is something wrong either with him (doctrine or his disobedience) or you. Chances are it’s you.
Be Obedient
I’ll use the same story as last week: When I was called by God to become a financial secretary at my church I started attending school where I learned the basics of church finances. When my pastor told me he wanted me to start I hadn’t become an expert yet, but I did know the basics of the job. So I dropped out of school and started work as the Financial Secretary.
I said last week that it is your job to do it the way the boss wants it done. This is even more important in the church. Have there been times my way was the right way and the pastor was wrong?
Yes.
But I did it his way. I am thinking of one such event right now. I reported a problem, identified it, and told the pastor what needed to be done. He didn’t agree and wanted to bring in a professional. We did, the professional messed things up and we ended up doing things the way I’d originally planned.
Did You Let Him Know He’d Made a Mistake?
No, I did not. I, at his behest, made a report on the whole matter and eventually turned it in to him and the deacons. But aside from reporting the facts I made no other mention to him. You see the pastor is the Lord’s servant. It was his call. My job was to obey.
So You Never Complained?
Not to him. But I took my complaints to the Lord. Last week I discussed skip level meetings. I had a skip level meeting with the Lord and the pastor wasn’t invited. And the Lord took care of the matter!
But yes, I complained to the Lord about it. And I have used the skip level meeting idea throughout my work in the ministry as a Financial Secretary. Did God always work things out in the way I wanted? Of course not.
What is the Best Attitude to Have in Church Service?
Sometimes, believe it or not, the pastor is in the right. In fact, the safest attitude to take when working for a pastor is to assume that the pastor is right and I am wrong. Saves a lot of heartbreak.
A lesson I learned decades ago involved something my wife and I wanted to do in relationship to our getting married. Our pastor knew exactly why we wanted to do it and even understood it. Ordinarily he would have approved, but he knew something that we didn’t and said no but didn’t tell us why at the time. Did I complain to the Lord? In all honesty I don’t remember. But I do remember that years later both my wife and I fully understood the pastor’s decision and it was the right decision.
The fact is the very nature of a pastor’s job puts him in possession of information the rest of us simply don’t have. So it is a wise thing to trust your pastor.

State Motto, In God We Trust

State Motto, In God We Trust

Monday through Friday I deal with different subjects in this blog. I also post my blog to my Facebook page at RFrederickRiddlesWorld. Monday’s I try to focus on issues. This week I am taking a look at State Motto, In God We Trust.
Part of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act (Florida) reads thus, “Each district school board shall adopt rules to require, in all the schools of the district and in each building used by the district school board, the display of the state motto, ‘In God We Trust,’ the designated under s. 15.0301, in a conspicuous place.”
According to the Sunday newspaper “the national and state motto, already featured on American currency, the state flag and even some Florida license plates, is now required by law to be displayed in all Florida schools.”
This article went on to tell about the history of the law and how schools are implementing it. But, aside from a Florida law, how are we to implement the truth it represents in ourselves?
Are We Trusting God?
It is one thing to say In God I Trust but it is altogether different to actually practice it. The truth is we often fail to trust God. It is a failure not just in big things, but in the little things as well. We want to trust Him but we don’t. We know it isn’t His fault that we lack trust although we often point the finger at Him. There’s a lot involved in trusting God.
In What Do We Trust God?
There is a public affirmation and a private affirmation. The state law deals with the public affirmation. It is a good law that needed to be done. And it is just about all the state can do, but what about us?
The problem is that in our private lives we don’t always measure up. Some people will declare the motto publicly, but without any personal (private) commitment or follow through. Trusting God can’t be legislated and this law has wisely refrained from that. It requires the public display of the state motto and nothing more. But we as a people need to take it much further and make it a part of our personal makeup. True revival only comes when we place our whole trust in God.
Trusting God is belief in God and in what He’s said. In some languages there is no word for believe. The closest we can come in conveying belief in that language is to say something like, “put your whole weight upon Jesus.” That is what trust is about, placing our full weight upon Him.
How Do We Trust God?
There is no formal routine to follow or formula to apply. Trusting God is different from one person to another. Let’s pretend there are 10 billion people in the world. I would say then that there are 10 billion ways of trusting. Each person is unique. And not only because of the number of people, but you can also through in the number of issues upon which we need to trust him. Now you’re talking about billions, maybe trillions of ways.
For example, I may be trusting God to provide for my next meal, but someone else may be trusting God to use them to bless others. If He so chooses He can use the one to respond to the trusting need of the former. In the end, trusting God is both personal and constant. Simply starting your day by saying I trust in God is a good start, but we need to reaffirm that throughout the day. We all have needs and wants, but we need to trust God’s daily provision that He knows what is best for us!
The Result of Trusting God
There are two places where the results of trusting God are manifested. The first is in our earthly lives, whether daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly. We’ll see the fruit of trusting God or not trusting God right here in our lives as they are lived out on Earth. That is very important. And the truth is that God wants to bless us.
But the more important place is in heaven. Someday in heaven all the saved throughout time and throughout the world will stand before the Lord. And He will reward us according to our works, including how we lived our lives. He will reward us with Crowns and blessings.
What crowns will I receive? I don’t know. While the crowns I’ll receive are all important the most important thing is what I’ll do with them. Read what the Bible says in Revelation 4:10: “The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne.”
If you believe as I do that these elders represent us then we’ll cast our thrones before Jesus!

Agape Love

Agape Love

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
Before taking a closer look at Agape, let’s look at the four different words in the Bible for love:

  1. Eros: erotic love. This is not found in either the Old Testament or New Testament.
  2. Storge: empathy. This is in the Bible and has to deal with having empathy for someone.
  3. Philia or Phileo: friendship, having tender affection for someone or something. While this can include sexual it is usually in relationship to brotherly love. We get philanthropia, love of people, from it; also philanthropy, love of humanity.
  4. Agape: sacrificial love. Best example is God loves us no matter what!

The problem we have in today’s society is that while love is on the minds of people, even to the point of emphasizing God is love, it usually is speaking of Eros or, at best, Phileo. Simply put the unbelieving world doesn’t know the difference between the different types of love, so they bring God’s love down to what they understand thereby polluting it.
Agape love actually doesn’t have a definitive meaning. Sacrificial love probably comes the closest, but it still doesn’t catch the whole meaning. That is why when describing it we often need examples. The example above (John 3:16) shows sacrificial love and a whole lot more. How do you describe the kind of love it took for God the Son to suffer separation from God the Father for even a second? And He did it for us! Yes, it is Agape love at its best but it is impossible to define it with any more meaning in man’s tongue.
Yet we are commanded to have Agape love. In John 13:34 we are told to love one another, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” That is not talking about sexual love or even friendly love, but rather a sacrificial love for one another. We Christians are to be known by that kind of love with the added “especially of the household of faith.”
What doesn’t Agape love mean?”
As stated above it doesn’t mean sexual love. Nor does it mean brotherly love. Sometimes the world wants us to be more loving toward those who are gross sinners. They use Scripture that contains the Agape love as their basis. That is pure ignorance of the Word of God. God loves everyone but not their sins. And that is what we as Christians need to be: love the sinner but hate the sin. That’s hard to do because many people in the bondage of sin want you to “tolerate” their sin which the Bible condemns.
The fact of the matter is everyone was born a sinner. Each one of us is born with a natural bent toward sin of any type. God understands this, which is why it was necessary for Him to send His Son to pay the penalty for sin. But Christ’s sacrifice of His life and His Divine oneness with the Father isn’t a Get Out of Jail card enabling us to sin and then use the card when necessary. It is a Gift Card paid for by Jesus Christ. It has eternal value but cannot be used as an excuse for illicit activities.
So God wants us to show a sacrificial love toward everyone. We are to judge sin as He judges it, but we are to love the sinner with open arms restoring them as much as is possible. This is particularly true of our love for the brethren (other born again people).

The Church and the Rapture

The Church and the Rapture

Today I am writing about the Church and Doctrine the Rapture of the Church.
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” I Thessalonians 4:16-17. (Emphasis added)
We get the word “rapture” from the Latin word for “caught up.” Some people say the word rapture isn’t in the Bible, but it is in its translated form. It has been taught from the beginning of the church that the Rapture is a Pre-Tribulation event. And from it comes another fundamental doctrine the Imminent Return of Christ. Historically speaking these are fundamental doctrines.
Today there is a growth of an old error that teaches a Post-Tribulation Rapture. Now I know some of you may embrace this doctrine or another one called the Mid-Tribulation doctrine. But these are not considered fundamental, but rather errors. While there are selected verses that can be made to support these non-fundamental beliefs the weight of scripture teaches a Pre-Tribulation rapture.
If you prefer one of the other beliefs, that is fine with me. But, please, don’t call it fundamental. And don’t call yourself a fundamentalist. The truth is you are not a fundamentalist if you abandon any fundamental belief such as:

  • Deity of Christ
  • The fallen nature of man
  • The need for a Savior
  • Christ being that Savior
  • The pre-tribulation Rapture
  • Hell
  • And others [not meant to be an exhaustive list]

The Imminent Return of Christ is not, to my knowledge, ever identified as a belief by name. However, if you read the letters of Paul and the other Apostles it is clear they looked to His return in their own lifetime. Throughout the history of the church, godly men and women have looked for the return of Christ in their own lifetime. And we today look for His return, maybe today while you are reading this blog.
Here’s another personal view: If the Rapture is not until after the Tribulation then why get saved now? Why not wait until the Anti-Christ appears and, recognizing that the time has come, then get saved? Preposterous? Yes, but human nature takes such a stance.
Man doesn’t want to face his eternal destiny so he puts it off. And, according to this belief, he still has at least 7 years before the Rapture takes places. So, like so many humans, he relaxes thinking he has time.

Insights: World of Noah and the Ark

“The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.”
God communicated His intentions to Noah and sent Noah out to preach the coming judgment upon mankind and indeed the world. But the world didn’t listen. They went on their way singing, dancing, living immoral lives, and laughing at Noah and those who followed him. But God had the last laugh.
Not that He was laughing. He had warned them and caused Noah to build a ship so designed that hundreds of people could have been saved. But only 8 people were saved! He had warned them and provided a refuge but they spit in His face.
But we’re no better!
God still warns us. Not of a coming judgment of water but of a coming judgment of fire and pestilence. But we are no better than our ancestors. Today to believe in the Bible is to be increasingly mocked. So-called smart people laugh at the Bible, mock it, and generally mock God. They ask:

  • Where is God?
  • Where are His miracles?
  • When is His judgment?
  • Where are the preachers of righteousness?

They go about not only mocking God and His Word but mocking Christians. Then there are those who invade our churches to change doctrine. I know of a pastor who once held to the fundamental truth of the imminent return of Christ also called the Rapture. Now he’s departed from that fundamental truth yet still wants to be called fundamental. That’s a story for another time, but my point here is despite God’s repeated warnings we play fast and loose with His Word, we ignore His warnings, and we go on our merry way.
I’m not talking about our proclivity to sin, although that is certainly a major problem. The truth is that this world has rejected God. Nowadays people call that which is evil, good and that which is good, evil. The Bible condemns homosexuality but our world embraces it and its offspring: Lesbianism, same sex marriage, gender identity. etc.

  • Instead of the absolutes of God’s Word we now have the end justifies the means;
  • Instead of the sanctity of life we have abortion;
  • Instead of strong families we have the breakdown of the family and the rise of homosexuality.

Folks, we all need revival; we need Christ; we need the Word of God!

The Church & America

Today I am writing about the Church and America.
In my last blog concerning the Church I defined the church. Today I want to take a look at the church and America. When I speak of the church I am not speaking of a particular denomination, but rather the Christian church as a whole.
From the very beginning when the Pilgrims came to America the church played a role. Most, if not all, had been persecuted for their faith. They saw America as their last chance to be able to worship God as they believed the Bible taught.
The Mayflower Compact
This document signed by the pilgrims starts out by saying, “In the name of God.” I counted four times that God is mentioned. Moreover there are references to “Defender of the Faith,” and “Christian faith.” It is a document that represents both their spiritual outlook and their commitment to the faith once delivered; a faith based on the Bible.
Declaration of Independence
This document authorizes our independence and the establishment of a constituted government and is bathed in references to God’s involvement. It begins with a prologue, if you will, that sets the stage by appealing to the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God. But then follows the famous line, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator …” We have not always lived up to these words but God has honored them. With those few words we were aligning ourselves with God and His Word.
Has America always lived up to that commitment? No. But it doesn’t change the commitment. We even had to fight a Civil War to bring us into line with His will. But He has blessed us to this very day because of our forefather’s commitment even though we have in recent decades slipped!
He has sent mighty revivals that have altered our destiny. Our nation has been either honored or reviled for our faith, but He has remained true.
The Constitution
While this document does not contain references to Christianity the very first Amendment does: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;…” Please note it says Congress shall make no law. Up to that time nations around the world had national churches where citizenship required adherence to a particular religion. Here in America people were free to worship God how they wanted to. While Christianity was assumed, it was not mentioned thereby allowing other religions the same freedom.
The Jefferson Letter
This letter is not a law but a private letter from President Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists (American Baptist Assoc.) who expressed concern over the lack in their state constitution of explicit protection of religious liberty, and against a government establishment of religion. He assured them there was a wall between church and government. While many ‘experts’ claim this was to protect the citizens from establishing a state religion, already stated in Amendment 1, the history surrounding this letter shows that the wall was to protect all churches from government intrusion.
Our History
Throughout the history of the United States of America the Christian faith and thereby the Christian church has been a bedrock of strength. Many times we have faced crisis and turned back to God. In my life I remember 9/11. Throughout the nation people flocked to church, seeking God and praying to Him. Men and women, conservative and liberal sought God. Unfortunately it didn’t last long as within weeks the nation reverted to its worldly outlook. Even so many lives were saved and eternally changed!
President Trump
The President has claimed he is a Christian and there is no reason to doubt that. Does he have a checkered past? Yes. But God changes people and so far all the negatives we hear are about his past. Without a doubt he is a lightning rod  to those who favor elitism and the power of a central government. But God has and still is using him to turn the country around whether it be political or economical.
One thing is for sure, President Trump has gotten government out of the way of Christianity. We were headed for a secular nation influenced by violence and a disregard for Biblical faith to go against religious liberty. That violence is now blamed on him but a closer look shows that it comes from the left who cannot understand how they got left out in the cold. It’s just my opinion, but I believe the majority of Americans, whether Christian or not, believe that Christianity is what is right for America.
Revival
I quite often point out that the need in America is for revival. I need it and so does everyone else who claims the name of Jesus! Neither President Trump nor Vice President Pence can bring about revival. That must come from each of us seeking God. Only He can bring revival.
Some people claim it is too late for revival. I respectfully disagree. Read the Old Testament. The Jewish people were at least as bad as we have become. They turned away from God and worshiped false gods. They also sacrificed their children to false gods. Therefore God brought judgment and revival came. Here, in the United States, we have turned our backs on God and substituted our own religion. I believe that in recent years we have entered a  period where God is showing His displeasure with the direction of our nation. It is not the final judgment, but rather now He may be giving us an opportunity to turn back to Him and once again be a Christian nation.
What will we do with that opportunity?

America’s Birthday

America’s Birthday

Today’s Issue: America’s Birthday
Monday’s I try to focus on issues. This week we celebrate the 4th of July, our country’s birthday!
What do you think about when you hear the words, 4th of July?

  • Parades?
  • Speeches?
  • Fireworks?
  • Picnics?

All of these are great. But what about the sacrifices our ancestors made. Many lost their lives, while others lost their wealth and health. Much blood was spilled. For what?

  • Independence?
  • Freedom to worship God?
  • Freedom of Speech?
  • Freedom from taxation without representation?
  • Right to bear arms?
  • All of the above?

I favor the last, All of the above. All of these and much more are what these people made sacrifices for. Today we live in a world where much of this is taken for granted, abused, and often dismissed.
What about the Right to Bear Arms?
I’ve never belonged to the NRA nor do I plan on joining. But I believe strongly in the right to bear arms. I am also in favor of reasonable laws governing the ownership of guns. The key word there is reasonable. But reasonable seems to take a back seat as far as the anti-gun crowd is concerned. Their answer is for all of us to love one another. This coming from teens, most of whom have yet to learn what real love is. Hint: it is not the love that Hollywood peddles. And who will obey these laws? Not the criminals nor those bent on doing harm. Only law abiding citizens will. Which means the criminals will have an unarmed citizenry to prey upon.
What about Freedom to Worship God?
This country was founded by Christians, our Constitution is based on Biblical principles, the Preamble references Him, and the practice of our pioneers was to worship God. But today Christianity is becoming an abused child. While religions like Islam, which worship another god, have many rights and protections, Christianity is undergoing attacks. And unless we turn back to God it will only get worse.
What about Freedom of Speech?
Nowadays we live in a world governed by people who want to take away our right to disagree and express our own opinion. While the Liberal meltdown over the Trump election is a classic example of hatred and the effort to suppress those who support Trump, it is by far not the only one. Colleges and universities are now increasingly becoming institutions where freedom of speech is fast disappearing. Right now it is centering on conservative political stances and upon Bible believing Christians. But if not corrected it will get worse. Eventually we will have a dictatorship of thought.
What about Freedom from taxation without representation?
With a Congress that endlessly debates and does nothing, we are in effect experiencing taxation without representation. It is the home of the ‘swamp.’ There are too many Republicans and Democrats more interested in their own political agenda than they are in solving national problems. So are problems fester and become worse. It is a miracle that the Trump Administration has gotten so much done while dealing with a do-nothing Congress. And yet he has accomplished much.
(A little side note here: Some liberals have the audacity to say that the rebounding economy is a result of Obama’s tenure. His eight years in office did little for our economy which was inching along not on strong industrial growth, but on low paying jobs. You want to see when the economy took off look at the day after Trump’s election and since!)
Ladies and gentlemen, if you want to see America get back on track and “be great again,” you need to support Trump. You don’t have to like him, but right now his administration is the strongest thing going?
What about the Church?
The church is under attack from without and within. The Bible has been diluted, the message lost, and the people weakened. Don’t get me wrong! There are churches that stand for the Word of God, that preach salvation by no other name but Jesus, and that worship God faithfully. But they are disappearing. But the question is legitimate. Our real need is for revival!

Today’s Issue: Trade War with China

Monday’s I try to focus on issues. The media seems to be upset that we might have a trade war with China. They give reasons that sound right, but upon investigation we find:

  1. We export only $130 billion of goods and services
  2. We import $505 billion of goods and services

Do the math. A Trade War will end in our (America’s) favor.

Commentator Dick Morris points out this is tantamount to a subsidy for China, which is a potential enemy and right now a competitor. I agree. China is a country that only moves when it is in their best interests.

What does that mean?

It means that they have to be incentivized to lower tariffs and lessen restrictions on American products. Sticking with Trump on this should be a no-brainer, but the media is so anti-Trump that they are blind to anything good he does! And this would be good.

What about the stock market?

The thing to remember about the stock market is that it is made up of people who are concerned with profits. They get jittery about just about everything. And it is not a reflection of today’s world but of a possible economic truth 6 months or more into the future. A future that is constantly changing.

So why all the panic?

I think it is another example of agenda over facts. The media is always looking for some way to put down President Trump. Just like they place the blame on Trump for alien children being separated from their parents even though it is illegal to incarcerate children along with their parents.  The blame really belongs on previous administrations who allowed this immigration mess to grow and upon the parents who smuggle the children into our country. (Their actions are understandable but cannot be tolerated.)

In the same manner the media will twist the facts to make it look like a trade war with China is a bad thing. Sometimes taking medicine has bad side effects but it is necessary for your health. A trade war with China will cause some discomfort but in the end American manufacturers and employers will be better off. Which means the average American will be better off.

So what should we do?

Wait it out. At the least we have a President who is working on our behalf. You have to go all the way back to President Reagan to find that kind of leadership.

The Mighty Pen

Today I am writing about the power of the word. We writers wield a powerful tool that can inspire, transform, build or it can tear down, spoil, destroy. Writing is a time honored craft that can and often does serve God.

Generally I blog about writing books; in particular, novels. But there are other examples of where writing can be viewed as a service. These are writing:

  • Blogs

Blogs are not only an expression of yourself, but they are sources of influence, as well. Some people are only known because they have a fantastic blog. It’s easy to get started with WordPress and it is fun.

  • Letters

Some people write letters for others. You can actually make money doing this. You can also personally influence people for your own causes.

  • Novels

My favorite. If you have a lively imagination you can write lively stories. Writing Christian fiction is not much different than writing fiction. It is fiction with a Christian worldview. If you can do this, you have the potential to be very successful or extremely happy because you are doing something you truly love.

  • Poetry

In the early days I wrote poetry, but it was for personal use. It actually helped me win my wife. I was never interested in pursuing it as a career, but I did enjoy it.

  • Skits

Writing for skits, plays, etc. can be rewarding. I know next to nothing about this, but people have and do make good money in it.

  • Soul Winning Tracts

You’ve seen all those tracts out there. Go to any church that believes in and practices soul winning and you will find a tract rack or display. Somebody writes them. And many are very good.

What other examples are there? Write them down. And then take them to the Lord to find out if any are for you. Being a writer is rewarding whether you make money or not. There are other more enduring rewards like satisfaction, self respect, the respect of others, and that feeling you get when you’ve done something right.

As for me, I write not to get rich (probably a good thing) but because I love to write. You could say it’s in my blood. Why do you write? What is your motivation?

Publishing with Create Space

Publishing with Create Space

Last Friday I was helping a friend set up a publishing platform. So I thought it appropriate to discuss Publishing With CreateSpace. This may end up being multiple parts, but here goes.

Why Should You Avoid the Big Publishers?

That’s a good question. There are of course good reasons for using the big publishers, more often known as traditional publishers. In brief, they are established and well known, which gives them a marketing edge and they pay royalties, sometimes good ones. But beyond that they are the ones who are in control and reap the profits.

Traditional publishers exercise literary control. They decide whether your book will be accepted or not for publishing; they have control over the content; and they control most of the publishing process.

What About Self-Publishers?

When I started writing in 2003 I began with AuthorHouse. I was pleased with its quality, its low price (about $400 back then), and the guidance I received. But as time went on I became dissatisfied. At $400 per new book it wasn’t all that cheap.

Self-Publishers are better than traditional but they still have ultimate control. If you want to have control of your writing, publishing, and marketing then you need a different approach. That brings us to CreateSpace.

What is CreateSpace?

CreateSpace is a publishing platform that offers you the control you desire and, along with it, the ability to reap the profits. Would you like to start getting 35% royalties at the first printing? Or how about 70% royalty? Either one is possible.

When you publish your book through CreateSpace you can also transfer the document to KDP Kindle. However, I recommend publishing the Kindle version directly through KDP. Or you can begin the process through CreateSpace and once transferred to KDP, go to KDP and replace the content with content that has been customized for Kindle (ie., removing paging, headers, and anything else that is unnecessary for an ebook). I always copy the finished CreateSpace book to a name such as [Title] + “for Kindle” so that I have one for print and one for Kindle.

What Other Advantages are There?

With Self-Publishers you will probably pay for your ISBN number (either within price or extra), which is necessary if you want to sell your book to libraries, schools, or even worldwide. CreateSpace will provide FREE ISBNs or they will sell you one. The CreateSpace ISBNs automatically are eligible for Expanded Distribution which allows for CreateSpace Direct (wholesale, etc.), Bookstores and Online Retailers (e.g., Barnes and Noble, Ingram, and NACSCORP.), as well as Libraries and Academic Institutions through Baker & Taylor.

It all depends on your needs. Generally, I have found their free ISBN to be what’s needed.

Another advantage is the Photo Gallery. While it is not extensive and, in my opinion, needs to be expanded, the gallery provides many photos that can be used as covers. And if you have a photo you’d like to use they allow you to upload it (needs to meet their standards). Or you can hire someone to make a CreateSpace compatible cover for you. Except for a few rules, you have control.

You have control over the size of your book, and the pricing of your book. Over and over again, you are given the tools to exercise control. And for the most part, it is free!

How Do I Set Up a CreateSpace Account?

It’s actually pretty easy. You’ll need an email account, which will serve as your ID, plus you will need bank account information so that they can pay you your royalties. There may be some tax questions as well. Those are the essentials. After that it is simply following the prompts and answer questions.

How Do I publish a Book?

Again, it is easy. You sign in and are taken to the MAIN PAGE. Here you will select Add a Book. Once you have selected this you will be given a choice of how to proceed in creating your book. You will want to take the guided tour.

Each step of the way you will be guided and asked questions. The first decision will be the Title information. Title information is required and can be changed. It is necessary for you to receive an ISBN number. Once you’ve created a title and selected what type ISBN you want you will save the progress. From that time on the ISBN cannot be changed; it is locked in. However, you can change the title information.

To upload a book it may require a PDF manuscript. Simply save your Word copy to PDF and upload that version.

Do You Recommend CreateSpace?

Since we created T&R Independent Books we have found CreateSpace to be an excellent publishing platform. It works very well for us. We have used it since 2014 and plan on continuing to use it going forward. Your needs may differ from ours so you will need to make that decision yourself.
