When Was Jesus Born?

When Was Jesus Born? This is a legitimate question. We have grown up with December 25th as the time we celebrate Christmas. And I imagine this date will remain constant.

But what is the truth?

We will explore more on the other side of the break.

Now back to the article.

The following is an excerpt from What’s True About Christmas.

The birth of Jesus is celebrated on December 25th, but the actual birth is now believed to have been September 11, 3 BC[1] (Tishri 1 or Feast of Tabernacles). There are many reasons for this date, and I will be covering some if not all of them. The purpose for this is not to do away with Christmas, an unlikely event, but to bring knowledge to the table so that when we celebrate Christmas we do so with a true understanding of our Savior’s birth and of the events surrounding it.

In the truthinscripture.net article that I researched, one of the reasons for this date is that Tishri 1 (see Ancient Jewish Calendar) is the first day of the new year (Civil year).

Also, in Revelation 12:1-6 we have a future event taking place. But scholars have noticed that in verse 6 it reads, ‘And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place…’.

Because of the word ‘hath’ it is believed that verses 1-6 describe the birth of Christ[2]. Too deep for this book, but the evidence points to a period between August 27th and September 15th. And further evidence points to September 11th between 6:18 pm (sunset) and 7:39 pm (moonset). This is a worthwhile study for someone who truly wants to know and understand when our Savior was born. This date is also interesting since it is the same date that the World Trade Center was destroyed.

Any significance? Perhaps Satan wanted to hide the fact that the date was Jesus’ birth date. However, that is just speculation, but I thought it interesting.

There is additional evidence regarding the Magi that will be touched upon in the chapter The Magi.

The year 3 BC aligns itself with other scriptures, such as Luke 2:1-5, which says,

‘And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.’

The Roman king Augustus Caesar announced a taxation during the second governorship of Syria which was of Cyrenius. This taxation was also a time of registration when people would proclaim their oath of allegiance to Rome.[3] This then is why Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem.

Further, Bethlehem was only 6 miles from Jerusalem where Joseph would be required to visit in two weeks after Jesus’ birth for the Feast of Tabernacles, which commemorated the 40-year long sojourn of the Israelites when they left Egypt for the Promised Land. All Jewish men were required by Jewish law to attend the Feast of Tabernacles.

While the distance from Nazareth to Bethlehem was a mere 70 miles, the mode of travel made it much more difficult than it would be today. It is likely that he had a donkey upon which Mary rode since she was now in her ninth month. How many hours or days it took we are not told. But traveling on foot with her riding on a donkey and in her ninth month suggests it could have taken at least four days, possibly more. It would have been very hard on her.

But when they finally arrived and saw the crowds, Joseph realized with a sickening reality they would have a problem finding a place to live. He stopped and looked at Mary, who was obviously in pain.

“Stay here while I step aside to pray,” he said.

She watched as he made his way to a nearby tree where he knelt and prayed. While he sought God’s guidance, she looked at the small city. It was her first time ever visiting Joseph’s ancestral home of Bethlehem.

The sight of the small village overflowing with people was discouraging. But it was the odor that touched her nostrils that was truly depressing.

The smell consisted of a mixture of sheep dung, human sweat, and meals being prepared. The combination made her a little nauseous.

Joseph returned.

“We shall go in and seek a room. Perchance God has prepared a place for us.”

She nodded and they continued into the city.

That excerpt should have given you some food for thought. The book goes on to talk about the shepherds, the sheep, and the nativity scene itself. It is available on Amazon in both print and eBook. If you want it for Christmas then the eBook is the purchase to make. If you simply want it and don’t care about the arrival date, then you might consider the print version.

Speaking of which, the print version can also be purchased at T&R Bookstore where all our books are discounted. Grab yourself a copy and learn more about Christmas! This book may not answer all questions, but it will answer the date of  His birth, and much more!

Have a Blessed Christmas!

What Do We Know About Christmas?

What do we know about Christmas? You might be surprised by such a question, but the truth is that some factors we tend to accept about Christmas are not really true. Traditions have grown up that have replaced facts. I am not talking about Santa Claus which is a fiction we all understand as fictional. But there are some traditions that obscure our understanding of the real meaning of Christmas and what it is all about.

So, what’s true about Christmas?

That question became the title of my latest book, What’s True About Christmas? This is a short (less than 150 pages) nonfiction book that examines Christmas and the traditions associated with it. It is a book that takes a closeup view of the traditional Nativity scene, examining the various aspects of that scene.

When you do that, you discover that while some of the factors are biblically based, others are traditional. But uncovering the truth brings the Nativity alive!

We will explore these factors more on the other side of the break.

Now back to the article.

If you are like us, you like the bright lights of Christmas as well as the various Christmas displays. But in the world that we live in we tend to accept as fact certain ideas and/or beliefs about Christmas that may not be true.

In writing the book I have tried to research both biblical and secular sources to address the Nativity scene and its various components, plus additional factors. Here are some of the topics covered:

  • Birth of Jesus
  • Gifts
  • Magi
  • Manger
  • Shepherds

It was an interesting and exciting book for me to research. One topic, the birth of Jesus, was particularly interesting to me. I have known for some time, and you probably have also known, that Jesus was not born on December 25th. That date is more associated with pagan celebrations than anything having to do with His birth. But that leaves another question, when was He born? Do we know? Does the Bible tell us or at least hint at it?

The answer may surprise you.

The result of the research was a deeper understanding and appreciation for our Christmas celebration. In this day and age of commercialism, it is refreshing to learn the truths associated with this holiday. Truths

The book is now available as an eBook and a print book on Amazon.com, plus the print book is available at a discounted price at our bookstore T&R Independent Books.

A New Series Coming Soon

As the title says there is a new series coming soon! And here I discuss what is happening. My book Word of Joseph has been published and now I am into the marketing phase. But even as I begin that phase of business, my attention has turned to two new projects.

Don’t you ever take a break?

Of course, I do. But I love to write, and I will probably write until the day comes that I have gone to heaven. And maybe God will give me a writing assignment.

So, what are these projects?

Before answering that, let me delve deeper into the first question. I believe that we should take breaks. But that doesn’t mean stop all activity. There is always work to do as an author. I have already mentioned marketing. That requires the investment of time and effort. So, that is high on my to-do list.

Then there are the two projects. The first project is doing research on two new and different books. That involves searching for information on the internet, through other people, and through my own studies. Truthfully, that is a project that never really ends. You go from one subject to another. And, yes, it is necessary to take breaks along the way.

The second project involves two separate books; one is fictional, and one is nonfiction. The novel is the start of a new historical fiction book. Once again I will be taking a person right out of the Bible. This one is Moses.

The series is tentatively called Moses, the Friend of God. His story is told in the Book of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. And it is conveniently divided into three forty-year periods, so I plan on having a three-book series with that same division of years. I might change my mind and expand it, but right now I like the division.

The book will be based on the latest information I have been able to find yet have a fictional story surrounding the events. This is a series I have been looking forward to for a while now. Interestingly, the research I did for World of Joseph provides a backdrop for the first book.

More about this on the other side of this break.

Now back to the article.

As exciting as the series on Moses is, there is something more exciting. While I have written nonfiction before, I have never done anything quite like this.

I will be launching a series called, The Truth About. There is no limit as to how many books will be in this series. I plan on writing on quite a few subjects ranging from spiritual to historic to whatever. Since it is nonfiction, each book will be footnoted, providing the reader information to enable them to go deeper is they so desire.

But this new series is not just a change in content. It will also have a different format. All my novels are now 6×9 and I plan on continuing that format for them. But the nonfiction The Truth About will be 5×8, which is just right for fitting into a lady’s purse. Sorry, guys. I don’t imagine it will fit in your back pocket.

But just because the book is small, that doesn’t mean that the content is lacking. What it means is that I have focused on getting the facts out in a way that is clear, factual, and documented with appropriate footnotes.

So, what is the first book?

The first book of the series will be The Truth About Christmas. Christmas is coming fast and will soon be upon us. Christmas means a lot of things to a lot of people. We have tradition, myths, and good old-fashioned commercialism.

The question is what is the truth about Christmas? Is it Santa Claus or the birth of Jesus? Most people know it is about the birth of Jesus and that Santa Claus is a fictional character. But knowledge about Christmas spirals downhill after that.

We are all familiar with the Nativity Scene which depicts the baby Jesus in a manger, Joseph and Mary, Shepherds, and the Magi. But how much of that is true?

There are other questions, such as when was He born, why was He born in Bethlehem, which Bethlehem, and why did He come?

The book will clarify what is true and what isn’t. Another facet of this series will be the ‘Questions to Ponder’ at the end of each chapter. And at the end of the book there will be ‘Recapping Questions to Ponder’.

It has been an interesting, informative, and exciting time writing on this subject. My plan is to publish an eBook and a Print book early in October. It will be a book that you can read for yourself, or purchase as a Christmas gift for someone you know.

Speaking of reading it for yourselves, why not review one of my books. Next month I plan on submitting more books to be reviewed on Booksprout, but you don’t have to wait. If you buy one of our books from Amazon, you can post a review. Or you can try Goodreads where I am listed as R. Riddle.
